Illicit Intent Tour – Review

About the Book

Calliope Garland’s newsdesk assignment was fairly straightforward—dig up the dirt on the sketchy CEO of a Wall Street hedge fund. But when the man is murdered and valuable data destroyed, a simple investigation turns deadly. Calliope is unwittingly in possession of vital financial information and a priceless work of art; either of which may get her killed. With an ever-growing list of people who want to harm her, Calliope must set aside her reservations and turn to the one man she knows she can trust.

Miller “Tox” Buchanan is a study in contradictions: kind but lethal, passionate but distant, self-possessed yet hesitant. He knows he should keep his distance, but when Calliope is hurled into danger, Tox will stop at nothing to protect her.

…Her first instinct wasn’t to dial 911 but rather to call a certain Navy SEAL. She forced down the antiquated damsel in distress fantasy floating around in her head and rationalized the police would surely ask questions she was unwilling or unable to answer. She brought up her contacts. At the bottom, she touched the entry labeled, Tox, and the call rang through. A grizzly bear answered.

“This better be good.”

“Tox?”

“Calliope?”

“I need your help…”

Be advised: this story contains scenes of violence equivalent to an R-rated movie and explicit sexual situations.

Praise for Illicit Intent

A steamy and seductive romance combined with an intricate plot involving art thieves, assassins, and undercover intelligence operatives make Illicit Intent a ravishingly entertaining read that hooks you in from the first page and simply refuses to let go.-Readers’ Favorite (5/5 Stars)

Review

This book just has so many amazing aspects that are rolled all together into one amazing book. So, to say the least, this is an entertaining story that will leave you hooked and waiting for more. And while this book is a part of a series, you can read them out of order or pick and choose which ones you want to read! So don’t worry if you’re new to the series, but you also might as well just grab the first because you’ll want to read it anyways.

This story has twists and turns and an amazing story throughout. But, T=the plot to this story isn’t the only amazing things. The characters are also really well developed. I found myself loving each and every character as I met them and wanted to learn more and more about them. And while there is so much packed into this story it’s written so well that you don’t even realize how much was put into this story until you finish.

So, as you can see I really loved this one. It’s just such a well written book that I couldn’t help but fall in love with it.

About the Book

Margo Fletcher, eight months pregnant, is traveling by train from Chicago to Spokane, her childhood home. While passing through an isolated portion of the Rockies in blizzard conditions, the train unexpectedly brakes. Up ahead, deadly snow from a massive avalanche plummets down the mountain. Despite the conductor’s order for the passengers to stay seated, former Army Ranger Nick Eliot insists that survival depends on moving to the back of the train. Only Margo believes him. They take refuge in the last train car, which Nick heroically uncouples in time to avoid the avalanche. The rest of the train is hurled down the mountainside and is soon lost forever in a blanket of snow. Margo and Nick, the sole survivors, are stranded in the snowstorm without food, water, or heat. Rescuers might not arrive for days.

When the weather turns violent again, the pair must flee the shelter of the passenger car and run for their lives into the wilderness. They must fend off the deadly cold as well as predatory wild animals foraging for food. We learn that both Margo and Nick have secrets that have brought them together and threaten to destroy them.

Review

You know those books where you just have to take one look at them and you instantly know they’re your kind of book? Well, Cover Your Tracks was one of those books. I have a penchant for survival stories and as soon as I saw this one I just had to read it. And it did not disappoint. To say the least: this book had me HOOKED.

Now, when I say this book had me hooked I mean I could literally not put it down. I just had to keep turning the pages and seeing what fresh horror awaited our characters. And, as you can surmise from the synopsis, the stakes are high. But they’re also so much higher than you could even begin to imagine. And I don’t want to say anything more on that lest I accidentally give anything away.

Now, there are a few things I want to touch on before I close out this review and that is mainly some race issues towards Indigenous Americans I noticed throughout the book. However, I am not an Indigenous American so I just want to mention it but not make any assumptions based off of what I read. BUT, these have been removed per the authors/publishers request for the finished version and knowing that I can gladly say that this is an amazing book.

Review

What a perfect book to ring in the new year with! I had taken a slight book break (AKA I haven’t had a chance to binge lately) in case you cant tell and I finally got a chance to sit down and just read with this one and I am so happy that this was the first book I am logging in a review for this year. Because it was intense and crazy and wild and amazing!

There was just so much to like about this book, but what perhaps was the best part was that it is just a solid and well thought out plot. While I almost always guess the “whodunit” at the beginning of the book (can I blame my addiction to Sherlock Holmes as a child for this?), I still really enjoy books like this. And The Betrayal is definitely one of my new favorites in this genre!

This is a perfect psychological thriller for many types of readers and people. It has a little something for everyone and quite honestly it’ll just hook you from the moment you pick it up. So, go give this one a try (*nudge, nudge*)!

Review

Uhm, can we just talk about how crazy this series is?! I don’t often pick up crime/thriller books, and I don’t know why because I actually really love this genre. But this series is now a particular favorite in the genre because it reminds me of the OG Agatha Christie. And who doesn’t love Christie?

This book just took us down so many roads and it was such a wild ride. I loved how everything wove together and how the past came back to haunt the present. And this book is going to hook you and make you incredibly invested in what might happen next. I mean, you’re not going to just WANT to know, you’re going to NEED to know. So, maybe set some time aside for this book so you don’t have to set it down.

There’s something oddly relaxing about a crime book. They’re haunting and terrifying in all of the scarily realistic ways, but they’re also always so gripping. And The Dead Season is one of those books that fits that description like a perfect puzzle piece. I look forward to seeing what comes next in this series!

Review

This book is such a wild ride! And also reminds me why I’m not a huge fan of A.I., but that’s a whole other psychological development that I don’t need to get into. But if you like thrillers, twists and turns, and enemies hidden around every corner then this is the book for you! It really surprised me with how invested in the story I became and it’s one of those books that will be on your mind in the background until you get the chance to continue reading it.

I think what really made me enjoy this story the most was the characters. I always say I’m a world-building type of reader but when there are some well written characters I can’t help but to fall for the book. And what I love the most are believable characters, and our mcs definitely fit into that category! But even outside of the characters this book contains a really crazy, and oddly realistic, story in it! And when I say there are twists and turns I mean it, so buckle up when you dive into this one!

I’ve been trying to expand what I read this year and this is one of those books that my previously (*cough* still *cough*) fantasy obsessed brain would probably skip over. But I’m so glad I gave this book a chance because it’s not only a good reprieve from fantasy, it’s just a really entertaining book!

The Watcher Tour – Review

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

From the award-winning author of The Scamp, Jennifer Pashley is back with a searing literary noir about what it means to live on the margins of society and what happens when no one is watching…

Pearl Jenkins is a nobody. She was a woman who lived as a hermit in the woods. One day, she’s nowhere to be found, and all that’s left behind is a pool of blood and a child no one knew existed, raised completely off the grid and in the grip of Pearl’s manic paranoia.

Kateri Fisher is used to being an outsider. Now, she’s the only female detective in the tiny upstate New York town of Spring Falls, where everyone knows everyone, but no one will talk. It’s fitting that she takes the case that no one else wants. But as Kateri struggles to navigate the harsh rules of a new town while trying to learn the truth about the Jenkins family, only one thing becomes clear: neither she nor Pearl are as invisible as she first thought. Someone’s always watching.

Praise for The Watcher

“Pashley’s seamless, yet meticulous writing pulls the reader into the bleak world of rural upstate New York…Atmospheric and dark, yet emotionally compelling, The Watcher is simply phenomenal on all counts. Jennifer Pashley is nothing short of a rising star.” —Wendy Walker, bestselling author of All is Not Forgotten and Emma in the Night

“The Watcher is a taut literary thriller about desperation, desire, and what people are capable of when they’ve got nothing left to lose. Pashley’s masterful prose makes your heart ache and your pulse pound for every single character populating this chilly, unforgiving—and unforgettable—world.” —Layne Fargo, author of Temper

“The characters in The Watcher will rip your heart out…There is hope at the heart of this novel, and also redemption and justice. You’ll find yourself reading faster to discover what happens next and slowing down to wallow in the beautiful prose. Pashley writes about the people on the fringes of society with clear-eyed compassion and grace. It’s a gift.”—Tiffany Quay Tyson, award-winning author of The Past is Never

“Do not miss this dark and gorgeously told mystery that combines both the literary and noir. I was completely enthralled…You will not be able to turn away from The Watcher.”—Vanessa Lillie, Amazon bestselling author of Little Voices and For the Best

Review

Since I grew up in tiny town NY it’s always nice to read a book in that setting! It always feels like coming home to me, even if I’m reading a crime based book. The Watcher is the first book in a new crime series and I can honestly say that after reading the first I cannot wait to continue this series! Pashley just has a way with words that makes them flow off the page in such a delightful way!

For being a crime book this read is incredible atmospheric, which I think is the perfect addition to crime novels. It just adds that perfect extra sense of dread and etherealness that helps to captivate you as you read. And even outside of this the characters were all really interesting. I enjoyed learning more about them and getting all sides of the story.

Knowing small town antics I could easily see a small town crumble like it did in this story. And overall this was one of those books that I couldn’t look away from. It just had that perfect combination of realness, amazing writing, and an engaging story that will leave you needing more. And I really look forward to seeing what Pashley comes up with next!

About the Book

Release Date: October 6, 2020
Publisher: Crooked Lane Books

Ethan Faulkner is a precocious child with a brilliant but troublesome sister, a war vet for a father, and a weary mother trying to manage their family. One night a young woman rings their doorbell, desperate to hide from two men who are pursuing her, when one of the two barges in after her. The struggle leaves both of Ethan’s parents dead.

Years later, Ethan has a successful teaching career and a budding relationship with a coworker. But he hasn’t quite followed through on his promise to his dying father–to take care of his sister. Susannah is not an easy person to keep tabs on, is a handful even when the tabs are kept, and quite frankly, Ethan wants her to suffer for preventing him from getting to his dad before he died all those years ago.

It was a long time ago and Ethan tries to put all of it behind him. But that’s easier said than done. When news of a brutal murder breaks with evidence pointing to Ethan as the prime suspect, all the painful memories of his past come rushing to meet him. Lyrically conveyed with emotion and nuance, Never Turn Back is a powerful story about family, vengeance, and how some actions echo through the years with irreparable consequences.

Praise for Never Turn Back

The past comes back—with a vengeance—to bite a good-hearted teacher and his brash, broken sister in Swann’s excellent latest. I loved this twisty, sexy, fast-paced thriller.”—Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of Never Have I Ever

“Christopher Swann never disappoints. Swann’s unmistakable voice catapults this suspenseful story to the finish line, one dark secret at a time. A must-read.” —J. T. Ellison, New York Times bestselling author of Good Girls Lie

“An intelligent and layered mystery that had me burning through the pages. The balance of darkness and redemption without losing a bit of the tightrope tension is a skill most writers achieve only after an entire career.” —Brian Panowich, award-winning author of Bull Mountain

“Christopher Swann understands the dread that an incidental glance, a casual comment, silence between two characters can conjure. And it’s with this delicate but sure touch that he tells the story of a man trying to make sense of his violent past and prevent it from destroying the new life he’s built.” —Emily Carpenter, bestselling author of Until the Day I Die

Review

What better time to read a thriller than right now? Wait, I take that back, *than this year.* I mean, we’re basically living in one! But if you’re feeling like you need something to set you on the edge of your seat, give you some major suspense, and actually give you a great cast of characters (and a doggy!) then this is the one for you!

Now, this one is set up just like how I like my thrillers because it’s a “slow” start. And what I mean by that is that it sets everything up so carefully and lures you in, then SNAPS and everything gets turned on its head. So you read it waiting for that ball to drop and it just heightens the suspense for me. And I think it just elevates the story because you become so invested in it and a big mind twist at that point isn’t just for the sake of a twist but truly adds something to the story.

And even though I say this one is slow I mean it’s not slow at all. It will hook you right from the first page and you will become invested in all of the characters and what may or may not happen to them. And there is a strong mystery element to this story, which is something I always love to see!

Review

IT’S SPOOKY SEASON! And this is the best book to dive into for all the season feels. Think Clue meets RPGs meets thriller. And it’s got diversity! So it’s like the spooky read we’ve all been needing. Plus the spooky cabin in the woods setting is basically a fall necessity so I was already hooked before I even started. But the contents are also so wild and intense so I was still hooked right until the very end.

So this book features a rag tag group of friends. And I love how they’re the type of people that you wouldn’t expect to be friends but somehow they just work. While this book was spooky at times, it wasn’t the main focus. It was more of a thriller than a horror for sure but there was also LOADS of drama! I mean, if you have a bunch of friends thrown together in this type of situation drama is bound to follow!

This is overall a fun and crazy read! It’s got a little bit of something in it for so many people and is constantly edges the line of spooky. Plus you get to play the guessing game of who-done-it! And I ALWAYS love stories that give me a bit of a mystery!
