Illicit Intent Tour – Review

About the Book

Calliope Garland’s newsdesk assignment was fairly straightforward—dig up the dirt on the sketchy CEO of a Wall Street hedge fund. But when the man is murdered and valuable data destroyed, a simple investigation turns deadly. Calliope is unwittingly in possession of vital financial information and a priceless work of art; either of which may get her killed. With an ever-growing list of people who want to harm her, Calliope must set aside her reservations and turn to the one man she knows she can trust.

Miller “Tox” Buchanan is a study in contradictions: kind but lethal, passionate but distant, self-possessed yet hesitant. He knows he should keep his distance, but when Calliope is hurled into danger, Tox will stop at nothing to protect her.

…Her first instinct wasn’t to dial 911 but rather to call a certain Navy SEAL. She forced down the antiquated damsel in distress fantasy floating around in her head and rationalized the police would surely ask questions she was unwilling or unable to answer. She brought up her contacts. At the bottom, she touched the entry labeled, Tox, and the call rang through. A grizzly bear answered.

“This better be good.”

“Tox?”

“Calliope?”

“I need your help…”

Be advised: this story contains scenes of violence equivalent to an R-rated movie and explicit sexual situations.

Praise for Illicit Intent

A steamy and seductive romance combined with an intricate plot involving art thieves, assassins, and undercover intelligence operatives make Illicit Intent a ravishingly entertaining read that hooks you in from the first page and simply refuses to let go.-Readers’ Favorite (5/5 Stars)

Review

This book just has so many amazing aspects that are rolled all together into one amazing book. So, to say the least, this is an entertaining story that will leave you hooked and waiting for more. And while this book is a part of a series, you can read them out of order or pick and choose which ones you want to read! So don’t worry if you’re new to the series, but you also might as well just grab the first because you’ll want to read it anyways.

This story has twists and turns and an amazing story throughout. But, T=the plot to this story isn’t the only amazing things. The characters are also really well developed. I found myself loving each and every character as I met them and wanted to learn more and more about them. And while there is so much packed into this story it’s written so well that you don’t even realize how much was put into this story until you finish.

So, as you can see I really loved this one. It’s just such a well written book that I couldn’t help but fall in love with it.

Sunflower Sisters Tour – Review

Click the image to see my booksta post!

Review

Lilac Girls introduced readers to Caroline Ferriday, an American philanthropist who helped young girls released from Ravensbruck concentration camp. Now, in Sunflower Sisters, Kelly tells the story of her ancestor Georgeanna Woolsey, a Union nurse who joins the war effort during the Civil War, and how her calling leads her to cross paths with Jemma, a young enslaved girl who is sold off and conscripted into the army, and Ann-May Wilson, a southern plantation mistress whose husband enlists.

Georgeanne “Georgey” Woolsey isn’t meant for the world of lavish parties and demure attitudes of women of her stature. So when the war ignites the nation, Georgey follows her passion for nursing during a time when doctors considered women a bother on the battlefront. In proving them wrong, she and her sister Eliza venture from New York to Washington, D.C., to Gettysburg and witness the unparalleled horrors of slavery as they become involved in the war effort.

In the South, Jemma is enslaved on the Peeler Plantation in Maryland, where she lives with her mother and father. Her sister, Patience, is enslaved on the plantation next door and both live in fear of LeBaron, an abusive overseer who tracks their every move. When Jemma is sold by the cruel plantation mistress Anne-May at the same time the Union army comes through, she sees a chance to finally escape–but only by abandoning the family she loves.

Anne-May is left behind to run Peeler Planation when her husband joins the Union Army and her cherished brother enlists with the Confederates. In charge of the household, she uses the opportunity to follow her own ambitions and is drawn into a secret Southern network of spies, finally exposing herself to the fate she deserves.

Inspired by true accounts, Sunflower Sisters provides a vivid, detailed look at the Civil War experience, from the barbaric and inhumane plantations, to a war-torn New York City to the horrors of the battlefield. It’s a sweeping story of women caught in a country on the brink of collapse, in a society grappling with nationalism and unthinkable racial cruelty, a story still so relevant today.

Praise for Sunflower Sisters

From Southern spies to nurses on the northern battlefields, Sunflower Sisters weaves an exquisite tapestry of women determined to defy the molds the world has for them. The journeys of Jemma and the Woolsey sisters will have readers celebrating those who came before us, who fought for what they knew was right, and became timeless women ahead of their times.”—Lisa Wingate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours and The Book of Lost Friends

“Sunflower Sisters marks the third installment of Martha Hall Kelly’s tales of the formidable Woolsey Women, with this chapter unfolding across the plantations, battlefields, and parlor rooms of one of history’s most dramatic moments. The Civil War roils as a sweeping backdrop and an era of both heartbreaking and inspiring humanity. Kelly’s vivid prose, stunning historical research, and heartfelt, compelling characters make this a gripping, page-turning read.”—Allison Pataki, New York Times bestselling author of The Queen’s Fortune

Review

To say I was excited for this book was a little bit of an understatement. I mean, I literally started reading it as soon as it came in the mail. There’s just something about this story that pulls you right in and forces you to become invested in the characters and their lives.

This book is just so beautifully written and I really love how all of the stories come together. And it’s such a timely story that is done artfully. There wasn’t a single main character that I wasn’t invested in and I really just enjoyed the setting. I don’t want to get into too much of the plot though because I want you to be able to just fall into it and let the story unfold around you.

Also, although this is technically the third book in this series feel free to read them out of order! While the books follow the same family they are set in separate time frames so you can run out to the bookstore and get Sunflower Sisters right now!

In Light of the Summit

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

The much-anticipated sequel to IN SIGHT OF THE MOUNTAIN!

After Anna Gallagher’s first climb on Mt. Rainier, she faces a new challenge—enduring the ridicule and threats that come with breaking tradition. In 1890, being a young female mountaineer makes polite society uncomfortable, even angry. But despite the threats and inherent risk, she still has plans for another climb, even if it jeopardizes her family bookstore, and puts her in more danger than she ever imagined.

Emily Watson has always been close with the Gallagher family. As a young girl she dreamed of a wealthy husband, a fine house, and a future in Seattle society and now she finally has it. Her desires couldn’t be more different than Anna’s, but she’s confronted with her own invisible mountain to climb when she’s suddenly poverty-stricken. She must decide what matters most, and whether true love is worth waiting for.

IN LIGHT OF THE SUMMIT is a captivating story of ambition, heartbreak, and redemption. It’s a tale of two childhood friends navigating womanhood in the late 19th century, with as much grace as they can muster, while still figuring out how to be true to themselves.

Praise for In Light of the Summit

Turn of the century social conventions come in conflict with a determined young woman’s desire to climb Mt. Ranier in Washington State. Anna must make a choice, to be true to herself or “know one’s place” and conform to avoid conflict within her family and society at large. Author, Jamie McGillen, explores this and other social injustices historically imposed on women, many that still resonate a century and a half later – mountains yet to climb.” — San Francisco Book Review

“In Light of the Summit by Jamie McGillen is a charming sequel to her first novel, In Sight of the Mountain. McGillen’s love for her home state and Mt. Rainier shines through her writing. Her description is vivid and beautiful. Readers will be inspired to climb the mountain themselves. She brings Mt. Rainier and the Pacific Northwest climate to life. Anna is a strong and determined female character, and her husband Ben is always supportive. Their love is believable and sweet. This book is filled with adventure and romance and danger. The mystery is well-plotted, with several great twists. If you are looking for a good, clean novel to curl up in front of a cozy fire with, you can’t go wrong with this one.” — Heather Stockard, Readers’ Favorite (5 Star Review)

Review

You know, I really enjoy books like this. They’re soothing to read yet feature such powerhouse and inspiring women. It’s just a really nice combination that draws you wholly into the story. Plus the backdrop to this series is amazing and beautiful.

There were so many elements to this book that wove together so perfectly into one story, but I don’t want to get too much into the plot because the events are a direct follow up to the first book in the series. But the characters and setting have such amazing backgrounds and backdrops that you’ll find yourself flipping as fast as you can through this book.

The last nice, but also sad, thing about this book is that it isn’t terribly long. So if you’re like me you’ll be able to stay up late and devour this one in one go. But don’t worry, the book isn’t so short that it makes you feel as if the story got lost along the way.

First Quiver Tour – Review

About the Book

Immortality isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially for the 3,375-year-old virgin of Mount Olympus. Cupid’s coddled, humdrum existence takes a sharp turn for the worse when his mischievous aim sends a love-tipped arrow into the wrong rump, and the God of Love gets a taste of his own medicine.

Banished from Mount Olympus, Cupid plunges to Earth and lands in present-day Tarra, Indiana, where mortals go on about their daily routines, oblivious to the capricious gods stirring the pot from above. Delighted to discover his wings and pubescent pudge have transformed into an impressive human form, Cupid swiftly leaves his virginity behind. His carnal spree is cut short when he falls passionately in love for the first time in his immortal life, and the full measure of his punishment becomes clear: he must find the Right Love match for the mortal he desperately loves, and then he must let her go.

To fulfill his divine mission, Cupid must survive the violent throes of his own coming of age while battling the powerful gods conspiring against him. FIRST QUIVER explores the meaning of love with an irreverent, contemporary take on classical mythology and the original dysfunctional family.

Review

Can I just say that this book was just too cute? I mean not only was the premise uniquely comical but the story was also surprisingly heartfelt. And I am such a sucker for anything Greek god related so it was already a win in my book. But this book just gave you exactly what you’d expect and then some with just a sharp wit and just every emotion on the spectrum.

I mean, once you start reading this one you’ll think to yourself: what’s not to love? First Quiver is a book that doesn’t take itself too seriously (you know one of those types of books) but also doesn’t fall into the trap of becoming a pointless book. Plus I got to realize that Cupid is under-appreciated! I mean after reading this fun story I’m ready for even more Cupid inspired books!

This is just one of those books that are a joy to read. The type that you could pick up whenever, settle down, and find yourself smiling as you read it. And I don’t know about you, but that’s something that I find much needed lately. And I love a cheesy but well done story, they’re just so satisfying!

Cover Your Tracks Tour – Review

About the Book

Margo Fletcher, eight months pregnant, is traveling by train from Chicago to Spokane, her childhood home. While passing through an isolated portion of the Rockies in blizzard conditions, the train unexpectedly brakes. Up ahead, deadly snow from a massive avalanche plummets down the mountain. Despite the conductor’s order for the passengers to stay seated, former Army Ranger Nick Eliot insists that survival depends on moving to the back of the train. Only Margo believes him. They take refuge in the last train car, which Nick heroically uncouples in time to avoid the avalanche. The rest of the train is hurled down the mountainside and is soon lost forever in a blanket of snow. Margo and Nick, the sole survivors, are stranded in the snowstorm without food, water, or heat. Rescuers might not arrive for days.

When the weather turns violent again, the pair must flee the shelter of the passenger car and run for their lives into the wilderness. They must fend off the deadly cold as well as predatory wild animals foraging for food. We learn that both Margo and Nick have secrets that have brought them together and threaten to destroy them.

Review

You know those books where you just have to take one look at them and you instantly know they’re your kind of book? Well, Cover Your Tracks was one of those books. I have a penchant for survival stories and as soon as I saw this one I just had to read it. And it did not disappoint. To say the least: this book had me HOOKED.

Now, when I say this book had me hooked I mean I could literally not put it down. I just had to keep turning the pages and seeing what fresh horror awaited our characters. And, as you can surmise from the synopsis, the stakes are high. But they’re also so much higher than you could even begin to imagine. And I don’t want to say anything more on that lest I accidentally give anything away.

Now, there are a few things I want to touch on before I close out this review and that is mainly some race issues towards Indigenous Americans I noticed throughout the book. However, I am not an Indigenous American so I just want to mention it but not make any assumptions based off of what I read. BUT, these have been removed per the authors/publishers request for the finished version and knowing that I can gladly say that this is an amazing book.

Review

What a perfect book to ring in the new year with! I had taken a slight book break (AKA I haven’t had a chance to binge lately) in case you cant tell and I finally got a chance to sit down and just read with this one and I am so happy that this was the first book I am logging in a review for this year. Because it was intense and crazy and wild and amazing!

There was just so much to like about this book, but what perhaps was the best part was that it is just a solid and well thought out plot. While I almost always guess the “whodunit” at the beginning of the book (can I blame my addiction to Sherlock Holmes as a child for this?), I still really enjoy books like this. And The Betrayal is definitely one of my new favorites in this genre!

This is a perfect psychological thriller for many types of readers and people. It has a little something for everyone and quite honestly it’ll just hook you from the moment you pick it up. So, go give this one a try (*nudge, nudge*)!

About the Book

Recently widowed Sylvie Andrus moves with her young son, Jason, to a small river town, and discovers she must solve a two-century old mystery to rid herself of the ghost who haunts her. Still grieving, she finds the ghost of her husband, Ned, waiting in her new home to seduce her. Jason warns Sylvie the ghost is evil but, swept up by her yearning for her husband and determined to reveal what happened to Clarinda Braxton, a Revolutionary Era painter who disappeared without a trace in 1794, she delays, putting her son’s life in peril.

Praise for Possession

“Ginny Fite weaves a fascinating tale of an undiscovered murder, a grieving widow, a mysterious ghost and the history that connects them.  A love story and a ghost story, POSSESSION celebrates the courage of women to overcome tragedy and grief.”—K.P. Robbins, The Stonehenge Scrolls

“As we’ve come to expect of keen-eyed author Ginny Fite, Possession is masterful. In a cyclone of peril and malevolence this novel spirals us back to chilling events of the 18th century, then lets the consequences fall on a 21st century mother and son.  For a story with compelling characters that is both haunting and heartwarming, Possession delivers the goods. –Lee W. Doty, Tidal Kin

“Ginny Fite strikes again, taking us on a wild ride in Possession—an unusual blend of mystery, feminism, and horror told in dual storylines. I consumed this book in a few sittings, desperate for resolution.” –Leslie M. Rollins, Good-Time Girl

Review

Have I mentioned lately how much I love ghost stories? Because I really do. There’s something about them that just lures me in. And Possession is one of those stories that swiftly lures you in, switching between two different perspectives and times to deliver the whole of the story.

What really makes this story so haunting and enjoyable are the characters. We get to learn so much about them and become invested in what is happening to their lives. Or what happened. And this book is short enough that the sharp focus on the characters is really what drives the story. And for me that’s what I like to see in a ghost story. I just feel like it makes the haunting aspect of the story that much more impactful.

I really enjoyed this new ghost story and getting a glimpse into these characters lives. It’s also a really fast read so you can easily devour it in one sitting. And I also want to just point out how well everything flowed in this book! Which can be difficult with a book set up like this.

About the Book

Release Date: December 8, 2020

Senior Investigator Shana Merchant has spent years running from her past. But she never imagined a murder case would drive her to the most dangerous place of all—home.

After leaving the NYPD following her abduction by serial killer Blake Bram, Shana Merchant hoped for a fresh start in the Thousand Islands of Upstate New York. Her former tormentor has other plans. Shana and Bram share more than just a hometown, and he won’t let her forget it. When the decades-old skeleton of Shana’s estranged uncle is uncovered, Bram issues a challenge: Return home to Vermont and solve the cold case, or the blood he spills next will be on her hands.

As Shana interviews members of her family and the community, mining for secrets that could help her solve her uncle’s murder, she begins to realize how little she remembers of her childhood. And when Bram grows impatient and kidnaps again, leaving a trail of clues Shana alone can understand, she knows his new victim will only survive if she wins the psychopath’s twisted game. In order to solve one mystery, Shana must wade into her murky past to unravel another.

Review

Uhm, can we just talk about how crazy this series is?! I don’t often pick up crime/thriller books, and I don’t know why because I actually really love this genre. But this series is now a particular favorite in the genre because it reminds me of the OG Agatha Christie. And who doesn’t love Christie?

This book just took us down so many roads and it was such a wild ride. I loved how everything wove together and how the past came back to haunt the present. And this book is going to hook you and make you incredibly invested in what might happen next. I mean, you’re not going to just WANT to know, you’re going to NEED to know. So, maybe set some time aside for this book so you don’t have to set it down.

There’s something oddly relaxing about a crime book. They’re haunting and terrifying in all of the scarily realistic ways, but they’re also always so gripping. And The Dead Season is one of those books that fits that description like a perfect puzzle piece. I look forward to seeing what comes next in this series!

Under a Gilded Moon Tour – Review

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

Crawdads meets the Crawleys…Threaded through with a meticulously researched, well-crafted mystery, this is historical fiction at its best.” —Fiona Davis, nationally bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue

From the bestselling author of A Tangled Mercy comes an enthralling novel of secrets, a tumultuous war of ideas, and murder as classes collide in the shadow of Biltmore House.

Biltmore House, a palatial mansion being built by the Vanderbilts, American “royalty,” is in its final stages of construction in North Carolina. The country’s grandest example of privilege, it symbolizes the aspirations of its owner and the dreams of a girl, just as driven, who lives in its shadow.

Kerry MacGregor’s future is derailed when, after two years in college in New York City, family obligations call her home to the beautiful Appalachians. She is determined to distance herself from the opulence she sees rising in the Blue Ridge Mountains, however close its reach. Her family’s land is among the last pieces required to complete the Biltmore Estate. But something more powerful than an ambitious Vanderbilt heir could change Kerry’s fate as, one by one, more outsiders descend on the changing landscape—a fugitive from Sicily, a reporter chasing a groundbreaking story, a debutante tainted by scandal, and a conservationist prepared to put anyone at risk to stoke the resentment of the locals.

As Kerry finds herself caught in a war between wealth and poverty, innocence and corruption, she must navigate not only her own pride and desperation to survive but also the temptations of fortune and the men who control it.

Praise for Under a Gilded Moon

“Elegantly written and expertly crafted, Under a Gilded Moon soars as high as any piece of literature can reach. You’re transported to a time and place in history that begs [to be] read late into the night.” —Robert Dugoni, international bestselling author of The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell and the Tracy Crosswhite series

“I was swept away by this dazzling, masterfully written tale of the clash of classes and cultures around the Biltmore in North Carolina. Joy Jordan-Lake brings the past alive with impeccable details, raw emotion, and parallels to our present world. A triumph.” —Emily Carpenter, bestselling author of Burying the Honeysuckle Girls

“This is historical fiction at its finest. With pitch-perfect dialogue and details so rich and so right, Joy Jordan-Lake sets us squarely—lock, stock, and barrel—in 1895 Asheville, NC, in not just one but two distinctive worlds. The grand Vanderbilts and their luxurious Biltmore fascinated me, and the mountain people with their human struggles pulled at my heart.” —Bren McClain, author of One Good Mama Bone, winner of the 2017 Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction and the 2019 Patricia Winn Award for Southern Literature

“Crawdads meets the Crawleys in Jordan-Lake’s latest, where she offers up a powerful location in the Biltmore House of Asheville, North Carolina. Pitting rugged locals against Gilded Age interlopers and threaded throughout with a meticulously researched, well-crafted mystery, this is historical fiction at its best.” —Fiona Davis, national bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue

Review

Can we just take a moment to appreciate this beautiful book? And not only does it have a beautiful cover, but it also has a wonderful story that takes you back in time to such an interesting time period. One where I admittedly could learn a bit more about.

The Biltmore Estate is one of those places where I feel like everyone but me has visited, but I was able to visit it through this story. And honestly, what better way to travel is there in 2020 than by book? I’m a really big fan of the setting and as I’ve mentioned many times I love when I can learn from a story. And Jordan-Lake did an amazing job at interweaving this story with facts from the period, location, and history.

But, what I loved most about this one is all of the drama. I’m such a sucker for some good drama and these characters had it imbued in their essence. They were all so different yet they were also all woven together. This was just such a gorgeous book as a whole and the writing really takes you on a journey itself.

About the Author

Joy Jordan-Lake is the author of eight books, including A Tangled Mercy, a #1 Amazon bestseller and also an Editors’ Choice recipient from the Historical Novel Society; Blue Hole Back Home, which won the Christy Award for First Novel; and the children’s book A Crazy-Much Love. Raised in the foothills of the Appalachians, she spent several summers in and around Asheville, North Carolina, where the Biltmore Estate is located. She continues to love the Blue Ridge Mountains and drags friends and family there with her whenever possible. Jordan-Lake holds two master’s degrees and a PhD in English and has taught literature and writing at several universities. Now living outside Nashville, she and her husband have two daughters, a son, and a ferocious ten-pound rescue pup.

Review

I mean, just looking at that synopsis should be enough to get you to pick up this book. But, if it isn’t let me just tell you: pick up this book! It’s got amazing storytelling throughout and I mean anything to do about bigfoot is an automatic plus. And the writing is impeccable and draws you fully into this story.

This is just a heartfelt story about discovery and so much more. It’s got adventure and amazing themes and narratives throughout. And even amidst all of this it has a fast pace that keeps the story flowing without ever getting boring. And who doesn’t love a good adventure story? They always seem to have the most impactful themes throughout and always teach me something new.

I really enjoyed this book and diving into this story. It immediately interested me by hitting one of my niche topic interests, but it held my attention because it’s just so expertly written. This is a story that can be enjoyed by many ages and I hope that many people pick this one up!
