Feisty Red Tour – Review

About the Book

“Stacey Kennedy turns up the heat and keeps us wanting more.”
#1 New York Times bestselling author Meredith Wild

Feisty Red, an all-new secret baby, second chance romance from USA Today bestselling author Stacey Kennedy, is available now!

Clara Carter is the brains behind Three Chicks Brewery. The oldest and most responsible of the Carter sisters, she doesn’t have time for anything but taking care of her son and making sure her family’s top beer, Foxy Diva, gets into bars across North America. Which means getting the brew in front of Colorado’s biggest beer distributor. Unfortunately, that becomes tricky when the man in charge of distribution is none other than Sullivan Kenne, the cowboy who ran out on her seven years ago.

Sullivan’s life has been filled with one wrong move after another. First, he tried to prove himself to his bastard father by joining a professional baseball team, a choice Sullivan still regrets. Then he bailed on Clara, the only woman he’s ever loved. Seeing her again makes Sullivan determined to right his wrongs. Unfortunately, he wasn’t counting on one of those wrongs being a six-year-old son he never knew about…

Reuniting with Clara and meeting his son is a shocking—and amazing—experience. But as much as Sullivan tries to return to his roots and be the stand-up cowboy of Clara’s dreams, the reality is that she’s having trouble trusting him. Luckily, Sullivan knows the way to Clara’s heart, and he’ll prove to her that a second chance with a cowboy is worth the risk.

Review

This story was so sweet and uplifting. Although I’m not personally a fan of second chances (stubbornness is strong with me), I really liked how it played out in this story. And this sort of second chance just worked. Plus it had that perfect balance of steam and story development.

What really made me enjoy this story the most was that it wasn’t toxic. Our MCs were aware of their faults and actively working on it. Plus I’m just a sucker for a man admitting and working on better mental health. And the family dynamic in this story was just so cute (who would’ve thought I’d actually enjoy family based romances? Cause I would have NEVER. And I blame my apparent grumpy sounding demeanor on my nap today).

Overall this is a really enjoyable romance with way more to it than just a bunch of steam. It has a great story and it’s one you’ll (hopefully) just really fall in love with. I mean, it’s written so well that I don’t see how you wouldn’t!

Excerpt

“How long has it been since you’ve done something like this?” she asked.

“Seven years.”

“Seriously? Seven years?”

The light from the fire was impressively bright, revealing the chiseled lines of his cheekbones. “Life is different in Boston,” he explained, gaze on the sky. “Not so quiet. And when we travel for games, we always play in big cities. I don’t get the chance to get out to places where the city lights don’t hide the stars.”

She looked to the sky herself, spotting the milky way. Over the years, many of her old high school friends had moved away with big city dreams. She’d never had those dreams herself, loving small-town life. The old Sullivan she knew would have hated the big city too. She figured she better get to know this Sullivan. “Do you like the big city?” she asked.

“Parts of it,” he said. “Some parts, I don’t.”

She smiled, dropping her head to the side to watch his expression. “Like the bars?”

The side of his mouth curved before he glanced her way, lifting an eyebrow. “You saw the tabloid article, then?”

She nodded. Everyone saw all the articles about him. Every week, on a new issue in the grocery store line. “What’s going on with all of that? The bar fights and stuff?” And, of course, by “stuff,” she totally meant women.

Obviously picking up on that, Sullivan’s mouth quirked up at the corner again. “Does the stuff wear dresses and high heels?”

She sent her gaze to the fire. “It’s none of my business. You don’t have to talk about it. It’s just…”

“Just what?”

She felt his stare. “You were always a one-woman type of guy. What changed?”

“Nothing,” he said in a quiet voice. She dared to look at him then, and his jaw was clenched, tension creasing the lines around his eyes while he watched the fire burn. “The women, they’re a distraction.”

“From?” she pressed, not even sure why she wanted to know the answer so bad.

The heat from the fire became all-encompassing as he drew in the longest, deepest breath then blew it out through his nose. “From the shit that gets heavy in my head.”

She froze, shocked by his answer. Of all the things she had expected him to say, that certainly wasn’t it. For fun. Because I don’t want anything serious. Something like that, not anything deep.

At the silence, he turned his head to the side, watching her closely. “Distractions help me take a break from that.”

“I suppose they would,” she agreed gently. She had seen the guy she loved fade when his mom passed away, but he was lost forever when his father’s abuse started. But right here, right now, she could almost see the guy he’d been when his mother was alive. The good guy, the guy who wouldn’t simply vanish from someone’s life so cruelly. “What about this bar fight that got you suspended?”

“It never should have happened,” he said, looking back to the sky with a heavy sigh. “I’m careful not to drink too much, to always stay in control, but that night, my control slipped.”

She took a guess. “Because of your dad dying?”

“I suspect my dad’s death had something to do with it, yeah.” The shame on his face was more punishment than anyone should endure, and the orange hue from the fire detailed every bit of it. “We were leaving the bar, me and a bunch of teammates, and we came across an asshole fighting with his girlfriend. He was screaming at her, and then he pushed her, and she fell.” He stopped to take a deep breath before continuing. “I didn’t know them. I had no business interfering. But something in my head snapped, and I acted before I even knew what was happening.”

“Wait,” Clara said, trying to understand. “Why didn’t you say that the guy was hurting his girlfriend? I’d say that’s forgivable. You were protecting her.”

“Because I’m no better, Clara,” Sullivan said, dryly. He turned his head then, revealing many years of pain in his eyes. “I put my hands on someone in violence, in rage. That is unforgivable.”

She tried to see it his way, but failed. “No, you were giving the guy a taste of his own medicine. Seriously, Sullivan, people would have sided with you.” She watched him for a moment, looking for a single flicker of agreement with her on his expression. Trying to understand, she asked, “So, instead of explaining that, you took the suspension?”

“That’s right.”

She processed, scenting the piney aroma from the trees hugging the firepit. Nothing felt…right. Something was missing. She sat up straight, scooting to the end of her chair to face him fully. “Why are you home, Sullivan?” she asked.

His brows drew together. “You already know why. To get my head right.”

She considered all this again, but something seemed off. “I know what you told me. A bar fight led to a suspension, and you came home to deal with your past because of the fight. But to avoid all of that, all you had to do was tell the truth about what happened. So, again, why are you here?”

Their gazes held before he looked back at the fire. It seemed like he wasn’t going to answer her, but then she almost wished he hadn’t. “When I sobered up that next day at the police station, I knew I was on my way to becoming him.”

“Your father?”

“Yes,” he said slowly.

Clara’s heart squeezed painfully, her breath all but gone.

Before she could even think up a reply, he added, “Of course, not completely. I still think the guy I hit deserved it. But I realized I became the very thing I hate. I pushed all the bad shit down deep enough that I felt nothing. Just rage. Until it all exploded.” He turned his head again, torment swirling in the depths of his eyes, and said oh-so softly, “My dad did that until there was nothing left of him, until only rage lived in the spots that were once good. So, that’s why I’m here, Clara. To face the shit that makes me feel uncomfortable so that doesn’t happen to me.”

The world seemed to slow as coldness swept across her. Not knowing what to say, she looked to the fire because, just like that, the years vanished. This was the Sullivan she did know, and she, behind all the hurt and worry for Mason’s well-being, loved this man. But he was drowning in the dark misery and desperately wanted a way out, but unable to find it.

“Clara.”

His soft voice pulled her focus to his warm, gentle eyes.

“I’m sorry for leaving you the way I did.” His voice blistered. “I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough to be what you needed.”  Tears welled in her eyes, and nothing could stop them from rolling down her cheeks. For as long as she could remember, she’d wanted an explanation, an apology. Now she had those things, but only one truth remained: they’d both done their best in a terrible situation that no one deserved. As much as she wanted to blame Sullivan for leaving and breaking her heart, she couldn’t. Her aching heart reached for him. “I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough to help you.”

In Trouble With Him Tour – Review

About the Book

In Trouble with Him, a not-to-be-missed, forbidden standalone romance from Stacy Travis is available now!

Falling in love was asking for trouble.

Meeting a hot professor at my best friend’s wedding has hookup written all over it.

Dammit it if he isn’t unexpectedly charming, making me want to abandon one-night stand plans for something more.

But dammit again if he doesn’t run off mid-kiss like a fugitive from Cinderella’s pumpkin coach.

That’s because he’s got a curfew as part of his house arrest for insider trading. Oh well, I’ll never see him again anyway.

Except that he shows up at my office—at my new job where I’ve just been made a law partner.

Turns out, he’s my newest client and he may be guilty of all kinds of things. Would it be a crime if he steals my heart?

Review

PHEW! Today has been BUSY! But I’m finally getting a chance to sit down and write this review and let me start off by saying you’re gonna want to read it. You know those books that are just enjoyable? Well, this is one of them!

I went into this story expecting to enjoy it, but I didn’t expect to fall in love with the characters as much as I did. They just really drew me into the story and made me so invested in what was going to happen next. Plus I just extra loved our powerhouse of a heroine and all she stood for. But out of all of this it was really just a clever story that worked and flowed so well.

Remember how I’ve repeatedly said how much I enjoyed this book? Well, it’s true. SO when you read it make sure you’re prepared to devour this and not want to set it down. My favorite set up is a bunch of blankets, some fur babies, and a nice hot chocolate.

About the Author

It’s a rough world out there, and we all sometimes need a good, romantic beach read, even if we can’t make it to the beach. I’ve spent many lazy days walking the streets of Paris and other gorgeous European cities, and if I’m doing it right, I’m bringing you a dash of romance and a vacay fantasy.

I can’t sit still, so when I’m not hiking, biking or running, I’m playing a very average game of tennis. Background music for writing undoubtedly features some U2, Lizzo, Billy Joel, Pink, Taylor Swift, and Led Zeppelin. Not necessarily in that order. And if I could only eat one food group, it would be cheese. Or wine. Or bread. Are those food groups? Whatever.

“Wow, time flies, huh?” he said.

“Are you having fun?”

He studied me for a moment. Then he was silent again. Of course, he wasn’t having fun. He was facing potential jail time and major fines from the SEC, not to mention he’d been put on leave from the job he loved, and his tenured position was probably in jeopardy. What a stupid thing to ask. “Sorry. I know this can’t be fun for you.”

After looking through the conference room glass for a moment, he nodded. “Actually, it is. But only because I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you since we met, and now that I have the pleasure of your company, it makes me happy,” he said.

“Wait, what?” I felt just as giddy as I had at age fourteen when a boy I’d been crushing on for months asked me if I’d mind paying for his slice of pizza after a high school football game. This was pre-cheerleading, to be clear. After I made the squad, the fourteen-year-olds paid for me. Mostly.

“Was that not clear? I can’t stop thinking about you. I’ve barely thought of anything but you since we met. And given that I’m charged with insider trading and facing jail time, I find that significant.”

“Oh.”

“Oh?”

“I mean, that’s… ordinarily, it’s exactly what a woman wants to hear. But now…”

“Now that you know I’m charged with insider trading?”

“No, now that you’re my client. You insisted on being my client. I gave you an out, and you insisted. So now you get lawyer me, not Saturday night me. That was your choice,” I said. It was my turn to look through the glass because I couldn’t keep gazing at him without repercussions.

“I wasn’t aware you were two different people. For the record, I like both,” he said with a smile.

“You don’t get both. That’s not how this works.” I turned toward my notes, hoping he understood that recess was over.

“I’m the client. Don’t I get to dictate how things work?” he asked.

“No, you get to be the client. You answer my questions, and you behave yourself so I don’t get fired or disbarred. I feel like you weren’t listening when I just explained all that.”

“I was listening. I just chose to ignore it.”

He was frustrating. The fact that he was hot in a nerdy chiseled-jaw professor way was also frustrating. I needed to get control of the situation. Looking at the stacks of books on the conference room shelves, I saw nothing to give me direction as to how to handle the situation.

They should make law books for this. Or self-help books. Any guidance would be welcome.

About the Book

Forget About Me, an all-new retro romantic comedy guaranteed to bring all the feels from Karen Grey is available now!

Ben Porter may be living the dream, but it’s not his.

His dad’s health scare might not be the ideal reason to come home for the summer, but it’s a welcome break from the stellar glitz of Ben’s life in Los Angeles. Even if modeling has him rivaling Marky Mark’s fame, posing isn’t his passion. Landing a role with a Boston Shakespeare theater brings him closer to fulfilling his dreams of being a real actor.

Facing the reason he went west in the first place? That’s another story.

Lucy Minola’s dreams were shattered seven years ago when a drunk driver smashed into her brother’s car. She knows it was her fault. So as penance, she works hard to care for her family, goes to confession faithfully, and buries all the feelings she had for the person who left when she needed him most: her brother’s best friend.

When an injured dog brings them back together, Lucy’s good-girl facade begins to crack. Women everywhere are obsessed with the rad body they see in magazines, but she’s the only one Ben seems to notice.

She can’t trust herself with the man who walked away… but can she let him go a second time?

Review

This book was just as cute as its cover and synopsis led me to believe! Plus puppy (yes, I am a simple minded individual)! But this book has all of the fun tropes that reel you in and hook you and the characters are all so relatable and fun! PLUS, (I know, it gets better) it’s set in the 80s! And anyone who knows me knows thats one of my favorite time periods.

So this book is a second chance romance, and while admittedly that isn’t my favorite trope I have to admit that the second chance books I’ve been reading lately are warming me up to the trope. And this book probably swayed me because the two characters are just so adorable! I just really enjoyed getting both their back story as well as seeing where Ben’s and Lucys relationship goes when they meet up again.

The one extra special thing about this book is the mixtape tie-in. So get a playlist ready because at the start of every chapter we get a new song that Lucy at one point picked out for her and Ben. And I mean, it wouldn’t be the 80s without some amazing music!

“Good Girls Don’t” – The Knack
Lucy’s Copacetic Shagadelic Mixtape, Song #6

LUCY

Saturday morning, it’s hot and sticky for August. By the time I get to church, every crease of my dress is damp and my stocking-encased legs feel like sausages, so the cool and dark of the confessional is welcome. I kneel and make the sign of the cross just as the screen slides open and Father Signorelli says the usual greeting—in Latin, even though he’s supposed to have switched to the post-Vatican II form. I’m glad our church still does things the traditional way. When I went to the Newman Center the few months I was at UMass, getting general absolution didn’t feel like enough, but the alternative they offered—sitting face to face to confess to a priest—was too embarrassing.

I dab my brow with a tissue before beginning. “Bless me father, for I have sinned. It’s been two weeks since my last confession. These are my sins. I snapped at a coworker because she asked me some irritating questions, and I yelled at my brothers for leaving their dishes in the sink. I have been uncharitable toward an old, um… friend because I’m still angry at him for things he did a long time ago. I talked him into buying things he didn’t need to because… because I wanted him to suffer.”

“Hmm. Those are unbecoming behaviors in a young woman.”

“Yes, Father. For these and any other sins that I cannot remember, I humbly ask pardon of God and penance and absolution of thee, Father.”

“Do your rosary and say five Our Fathers for your penance.”

I bow my head, say the Act of Contrition and do my best to focus as Father prays for my forgiveness.

When I step out of the box and into the incense-laden air, the weight of my sins doesn’t lift from my shoulders like it usually does, probably because I neglected to confess the many, many lustful thoughts that’ve set up camp in my nether regions.

I guess you could argue that I’m preventing harm by omitting those sins because if Father Signorelli heard what I’ve been up to alone in my bed at night, he’d surely have a stroke.

When I return from my lunch break on Monday, I’m greeted by Cindy in full-on puppy mode.

“Oh my god, that Ben Porter left you a message, Lucy!”

Stowing my purse in my locker, I spend more time than necessary changing back into my scrub top. I spent the break running errands—picking up a prescription for my dad and stocking up on toiletries for the family while I was at the pharmacy. I might’ve also picked up a few magazines which might just happen to contain a few revealing photos of Ben. It isn’t a sin to just look, right?

When I close my locker door, Cindy’s right there on the other side. “Isn’t that exciting?”

“Yes?” A balloon of hope floats up. I haul it back down to earth. No need to get all excited. He probably just has another question about the dog. I scan the corkboard where notes are usually pinned up. “Where’s the message?”

She finally stops bouncing up and down. “He didn’t call. He came in while you were out and I got to talk to him.” She whispers this like it’s the most exciting thing to have happened in weeks. Maybe it is. Although watching a dog yak up an entire package of tube socks last week was pretty entertaining.

“Oh. Okay.” I keep my tone cool, with some effort. “What was the message?”

“He asked me to ask you if you’d train his dog so it can be in a play! I wish I knew about animal training! How did you learn?” She grabs my forearm. “Do you need an assistant?”

Not sure where to start, I just nod. And then shake my head no. By the time my head’s circling, I realize something. “Did he leave a number?”

Cindy narrows her eyes. “Don’t you have his number?”

I don’t want to think about all this right now, so I exit the breakroom. “I guess I can get it from his chart if it’s not the same.”

She’s at my heels, nipping away with her questions. “Same what?”

“Um. Same everything. Number, house. Because he’s like… famous now?”

“Are you sure you really grew up with him?”

“Yep. I’m sure I did.”

Her smooth brow crinkles. “No offense, but you seem a lot older than him.”

“He’s three years older than me, Cindy.”

“So, he’s like mid-thirties?”

I stifle a sigh. Cindy’s only eighteen, so everyone is old to her. “Just FYI, Cindy, I’m twenty-five.”

“Not even! I thought you were way older than that.”

My brows go up as I stare her down.

“I mean, like, in a good way. Like you majorly have your shit together.”

“Uh-huh.”

Three bells sound, indicating that an owner is in for a pickup. I’ll take any excuse to escape from the interrogation, so I press the button indicating that I’ll grab the post-surgical cat. “I’m not sure I’ll have time, anyway.”

She follows me. “But you were saying you were trying to save money for that certification course. If he’s a rich model, charge him extra.”

She’s driving me crazy, but she has a point. How much money would it be worth to risk further stirring up the grief I thought I’d buried years ago?

Opening the cage to ease out a still groggy but now stitched-up and gonad-free cat, I whisper, “Hey, buddy, time to go home.”

Cindy, still at my elbow, closes the cage. “When was the last time you saw him anyway? I mean, before now.”

“Seven years ago.” Until last week, the last time I saw him was at my brother’s wake. But she doesn’t need to know that. “Things… ended badly.”

Talk about understatement of the year.

“Seven years! Lucy, jeez. Seven years ago, I was in elementary school! That’s forever ago. Forgive and forget already.” A single bell sounds, letting us know that a new client needs to be moved to an exam room. “Do you still want the cat discharge, or whatever’s behind door number one?”

I hand over the cat. “I’ll take the new patient.” I don’t have any ex-boyfriends left to surprise me, so I walk briskly to the waiting room, eager for a distraction. Whether it’s an engorged tick to be removed or a puppy needing its shots or a busted-up tomcat, taking care of an animal is always preferable to listening to my inner monologue.

Deciding what to do about Ben will have to wait.

Review

Now, I’m not a huge fan of second-chance personally (what can I say, I hold a grudge), but it really worked for this book! But it might have helped having a rock star swoon worthy main character to sway me over to this trope. So it’s official, I am now on the dark side because I thoroughly enjoyed this novella!

I think I liked this version of the second chance trope because there was ill will between the two but they also wished one another well. Which is a conundrum, but it made it more of a two destined to be together but trying at the wrong time (if that poorly worded explanation makes sense, I cannot think this week). But sometimes you do meet the right person and it just takes a second or a few chances to make it work. Our lives don’t always line up the way we want them and the same goes for relationships. And this novella tells us the story of two people who meet again and the sparks are still flying even after everything they went through together.

I’m such a sucker for rockstar romances, so that is probably why I loved this one so much. I mean, who wouldn’t want to read about a rockstar and enter that crazy world? But the characters really made this novella as I went along with them on this story. There were ups and downs, laughs and frustration, and plenty of chemistry!

Excerpt

“No,” said the bodyguard.

“But—”

“Miss, do you have any idea how many people try to get backstage by claiming they have some sort of relationship with Mr. Dillon?” Face a careful blank, the man in the slick black suit stared down at me. He had a point. I’d pushed through a crush of fans, getting my toes stomped on several times, along with taking an elbow to the kidney, just to talk to this guy. God only knew what it took to get near the star of the show.

“I’d imagine a lot,” I yelled back at him. Necessary given the volume of the music filling the space. “The difference here is I’m not lying.”

“But since everyone says that, you can see from my perspective how that’s not actually a point of difference.”

Adam Dillon, rock star extraordinaire, gyrated his slim denim-clad hips like an Alt-Rock Elvis on the nearby stage. He pouted and crooned about the woman who’d done him wrong. Me. That’s right, I was the big bad ex who’d broken him and woke him to the dangers of love. Or so the song said.

The song lied and then some.

According to the lyrics he was currently wailing, I’d ground his heart beneath my five-inch heels before blowing him a kiss goodbye. From memory, there’d been a lot of shouting, but no blowing of kisses. And having just kicked off the flats I wore for work, I’d been barefoot, my legs and back aching. No way had I been strutting around in stilettos. Home from a hard day at the hair salon, I’d returned to find Adam on the couch. The same place he’d been when I’d left for work approximately eleven hours earlier. The same place he’d been for what felt like months as I worked my ass off to pay the rent. That’s when all hell broke loose. However, it wasn’t the only issue that had caused our relationship to bomb. Nothing’s ever simple.

But back to the here and now. I grabbed the slip of paper out of my front pocket, holding it up for his perusal. “My name is Jill Schwartz. How many of those people claiming to know him have one of these?”

His eyes widened as he scanned the name on the check, before widening again at the amount. And fair enough too. I’d had a mild panic attack myself when it had first arrived. When Adam decided to make a statement, he didn’t bother with subtle. If only I could figure out what it all meant. If it meant anything at all, of course. And that question was what had brought me here tonight.

But I Need You Tour – Review & Excerpt

About the Book

Everything around me blurred and all that existed were his lips, his touch…

But I Need You, the second installment in the scorching hot This Love Hurts series by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Willow Winters is available now!

Some love stories are a slow burn. Others are quick to ignite, scorching and branding your very soul before you’ve taken that first breath. You’re never given a chance to run from it.

That’s how I’d describe what happened to us.

Everything around me blurred and all that existed were his lips, his touch…

The chase and the heat between us became addictive.

Our nights together were a distraction, one we craved to the point of letting the world crumble around us.

We should have paid more attention; we should have known that it would come to this.

We both knew it couldn’t last, but that didn’t change what we desired most.

All we wanted was each other…

But I Need You is book 2 in the This Love Hurts trilogy.  This Love Hurts must be read first.

Review

Well dang this book was amazing! I went in expecting a lot and it really didn’t disappoint in the slightest. And can I just say: the chemistryyyyyyyyyyyy! Like holy heck! Va va voom! *smexy growl* So yeah, this one was PRETTY good if I do say so myself!

Unlike a lot of other romance books this series NEEDS to be read in order. So buckle up because that means you get two whole books to devour if you haven’t read the first one yet! And spoiler alert the first one is just as amazing. And this is probably one of the best written romance books I’ve read yet. There are just so many layers and elements to this story that I was full invested in all of the twists and turns.

This is my first series by Willow Winters and sheesh, I have been missing out! She is obviously a master at storytelling and slowly unweaving all of the intricacies between the characters. So I will definitely be needing to check out more of her works. But I’m so glad I started with this series because I love it so much! And I will be impatiently waiting for book three!

In January 2016 Willow was staying up late with Evie and just thinking of all these stories. They came to her constantly so she finally sat down and just started writing. She always wanted to do it so she figured, why not? Today Willow cannot be happier for making that decision!

Excerpt

Marcus’s large hand smooths the comforter beside him.  My body is heavy and weak; every piece of me is practically lead, weighed down in this moment.

Hot, molten lead, to be more specific.  Unable to keep its form and desperate for somewhere to go.

There’s not a single soul I could have confided in.  Not one … not even Cody.

No one but the man who beckons me to come lie with him.  And if I’m honest with myself, it’s something I’ve wanted since he first whispered my name.

Swallowing thickly, I make my way to him, letting the floor emphasize each of my steps with a creak.  I don’t bother with pretenses, so in that time, I lift the hem of my tank top over my head, uncovering my small breasts and the cool air instantly caresses my body.

I don’t know how he’ll react but I imagine this is what he’s after, and with the weight of today still firmly weighing down on me, I want it too.  I’m eager to forget it all and feel something else that is far more intoxicating to lure me into the depths of sleep.

A hiss of intake is followed by a groan of satisfaction from the man in the room, but I don’t bother to look him in the eye.  Leaning against the bed, I kick off the loose-fitting sweatpants, but leave on the one garment that will stay between us for the moment.  With my clothes tossed carelessly on the floor of the cheap motel, I drag down the comforter that he just smoothed and crawl in.

It’s not lost on me that I’m exposed, bared to a man who stays in the shadows and won’t let me see him.

Something about that fact makes it even easier to do what I’m about to do next.

When I crawl on the bed, the springs give a slight protest with a soft squeak.  My fingers dig into the mattress and I lean forward on my hands and knees at the top of the bed.  My eyes are closed, my breathing even and I plant the barest of kisses on his hard jaw lined with stubble.  He’s rough against my gentleness, but something about the simple act, breaks down any wall of protest.

“Tell me it’s going to be all right?”  I whisper the plea, my forehead resting against his temple.  If he were going to push me away, now would be the time and it’s quite possibly something that will happen.  An act that would destroy me.

But I would take it.  I’d take it just as much as I’d take him laying me down on my stomach and fucking me raw on this bed.  If he’ll make everything right again, I’ll let him do whatever he wants to me.

Time tortures me as I wait for what feels like forever for an answer.  My eyes remain closed even when I feel him move, shifting next to me until his deft fingers slip down the curves of my side.  With goosebumps following the trace of his fingertips, a shiver elicits the darkest of wants.

“It will be.”  His answer comes with a nip on my shoulder, a warning maybe.  “You know I’m a bad man, don’t you?”  His warm breath trails down my shoulders like a silk sash falling from the finest of robes and all at once, he’s no longer touching me.

My long lashes flutter open and I stare directly ahead at his throat.  The cords in his neck tighten and the dark stubble begs me to brush the tip of my nose against it, just to feel how sharp it is.  “I know exactly who you are,” I whisper and although it feels true as each syllable slips out, so many questions in the back of my mind doubt my conviction.

Who’s The Boss Tour – Review & Excerpt

About the Book

Who’s the Boss, an all-new, sizzling enemies-to-lovers workplace romantic comedy  from New York Times bestselling author Erin McCarthy is available now!

Arrogant, charming and sexy as hell, Master chef Sean Kincaid is legendary both in the kitchen and in the bedroom. So of course it only took five minutes for him to get me overheated. My temper that is.

Because Sean Kincaid is my new boss. Who has strolled into my kitchen demanding I follow his rules. I don’t like taking orders from anyone but certainly not from a grumpy man who knows how to push all of my buttons.

And when a Best Chef competition pits the two of us against each other, it’s either going to be a sizzler–or a recipe for disaster.

Review

I mean, an enemies to lovers rom-com about two chefs is right up my alley. Well, anything with food is right up my alley, but that’s besides the point! But overall this was a fun and quirky read that I was able to devour in an evening. And even though it is a short book I still felt satisfied with the story and while I want more it also felt complete.

Let me start off by saying there was sooooo much chemistry between our two MCs! And that’s a must when reading a romance book. I mean, imagine if you hated the two *destined* to be together! It would be such a drag! But what I like most about this book is that it was funny! It’s such a bonus when I crack up laughing throughout but still get all those steamy chemistry riddled scenes. I mean, perfect combo!

I really enjoyed this one and actually liked that it was quite short. I tend to prefer my romance books, especially if they’re more of the rom-com variety, to be more of the novella length. I think it just allows for the story and romance to shine without getting too muddled when they’re a bit shorter!

Excerpt

The first time I met Sean Kincaid it was hate at first sight.

I didn’t know who he was at the time, but he annoyed me from the very first second he entered the same air space as me.

The feeling had clearly been mutual.

On my way to my friend Felicia’s engagement party, I was already in the elevator reaching for the button when a very tall, very attractive guy threw his arm up to stop the door from closing. The door bounced back open and he stepped in the elevator with a victorious smile on his face.

Then he stopped. Mid-smile, he just cut it off. Like once he’d taken in the view of me and made eye contact, he’d decided I no longer was worthy of his teeth being displayed.

It was so shockingly obvious that I had an immediate intense negative reaction in return. Boom. Insta-hate.

I had a reputation of being something of a cynic because I don’t think couples should jump into moving in together or say, get married after a couple of weeks. I believe in taking it slow and background checks, so sue me. Proceed with caution or get your heart shattered into a million pieces. Or worse, you wind up with a restraining order. But I wasn’t unfriendly. I liked people. I was open to giving everyone a shot. It was rare for me to dislike a guy on sight.

But that dismissive glance made me want to build a wall brick by brick between us so I didn’t have to look at his arrogant face.

“What floor?” I asked, to be polite, because even though I couldn’t shake that flicker of irritation, I wasn’t going to be a bitch.

“Four. I’m going to my brother’s engagement party.” He made a sound of disgust, shaking his head. “He’s marrying some psycho he met on a dating app a hot minute ago.”

We were going to the same party. Fabulous. I actually agreed with him that the engagement was too fast. Which it definitely was. Felicia and Michael had been dating all of three weeks. But that psycho was my best friend, and why was she the crazy one and his brother wasn’t when both of them had jumped into the engagement?

“I’m going to the same apartment,” I said, studiously staring at the numbers panel. Do not engage. Do not argue with a total stranger, I coached myself.

We were only on the second floor. Slowest. Elevator. Ever.

“Oh, you know Michael? Do you work with him? Can you talk him out of this ridiculous engagement?”

I had never met Michael (because as mentioned, Felicia and Michael had basically just met themselves) but it wasn’t reassuring that I would adore Felicia’s fiancé if he shared DNA with this guy standing next to me.

“No, I don’t work with Michael.” I turned and gave him a hard stare. “Felicia is one of my best friends. You know, the psycho marrying your brother.”

Understanding dawned, but he merely grinned. He didn’t look even remotely apologetic. “No kidding? Small world.”

“How does that make it a small world?” I asked, unable to contain myself. “There are eight units in this building, two on the first floor, and we’re on the elevator together. Odds are we’d be going to the same party.”

His eyebrows shot up. “It’s called small talk. A non sequitur.”

Was that mansplaining? My vow to be polite disintegrated. “Small world, small talk… what else in your world is small?” I asked, giving him a questioning stare.

He just gave a laugh. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”

“No. I wouldn’t.” Because I doubted he had a small anything, in spite of my jab.

Because unfortunately, he was actually a hot piece of man candy. I could admit that. He was tall, broad shouldered, with a strong jaw. He had light green eyes that gave off an icy coolness and cheekbones that women spent hours watching YouTube videos to try to achieve with contouring. He hadn’t shaved recently, but it wasn’t a full beard. Just a few days of caramel-colored stubble that I had no doubt most women would enjoy running their fingers through.

He was gorgeous and muscular and probably had a cock to back up all that confidence. Which made me dislike him even more.

“What do you think of this engagement?” he asked. “Seriously. No offense, but there has to be something wrong with your friend.”

“Are you serious?” Because again, Felicia was defective, but that made his brother normal? I wasn’t going to be a bitch on my own behalf, but if you mess with my friends, I will bring it. I opened my mouth to annihilate him, but got distracted when the elevator jerked to a sudden halt.

“Why are we stopping?” he asked, looking up.

The second-floor button was still lit up. “Maybe someone is going up from the second floor,” I said, because duh. That’s what elevators do. They stop at floors.

“But the doors aren’t opening.” He reached out and jammed his finger repeatedly into the “open door” button.

Fighting the urge to sigh, I just stood there and watched him pull back from the panel and run his hand through his hair.

“Nothing is happening.”

No, it wasn’t. I unfurled my scarf so it wasn’t covering my neck. It was December and I was bundled up from the commute from Brooklyn to SoHo. It was getting stuffy in the elevator. I had my purse over my shoulder and across my midsection so I didn’t have to carry it and I shifted so that I could unzip my winter coat.

Michael’s brother turned to me, panic clear on his face. “What the hell do we do?”

“It might start up again in a minute,” I said, not really that worried. I’d been on enough trains that had stopped and started again without any reason or explanation. I’d also been trapped in an elevator once about four years earlier and that had lasted three hours. Once we got past ten minutes, I would start to get concerned, but for now I wasn’t going to freak out. “Push the help button.”

That seemed an obvious course of action to me.

But he dismissed that idea. “No one is going to respond to that.”

Okay, Mr. Elevator Expert.

“I’ll push it, then.” I tried to shift around him, but he wasn’t moving. “Excuse me.” I was determined to keep my cool.

He wrinkled his nose and frowned down at me. “What? Why?”

“So I can push the button.” The frown deepened. His mouth was sensual, with lips that probably could do amazing things to a woman’s inner thighs, after he stripped her naked.

Review

This was such a fun, intense, and quick read! The story started off with a bang and just kept going from there! And the romance was just so cute. But what I liked most of all was that these two were equals. The female didn’t get shoved aside just because she now has a “protector,” she was just as involved as all of the others.

I have such a soft spot for precinct stories, but it might be because I’m absolutely obsessed with Brooklyn Nine-Nine. But I just loved the subject of this novella. However, I do wish that there was a bit more . . . steam . . . throughout. Yet on the other-hand it was kind of refreshing to read a romance more focused on the story aspect. Regardless, I still really enjoyed this one!

And lastly, since this is a novella it was a SUPER fast read. Yet the pace never felt rushed, the story fit perfectly into the length of the book and there wasn’t excess information to distract us from the story itself. Plus I find that I always really enjoy novella romances, I feel like they just work!

Excerpt

Tara took a step toward him, her arms softening at her sides. “You’re a really nice guy, you know that?”

The urge to correct her was strong, but Xander bit it in half and said, “Just doing my job.”

“The standard answer when someone says ‘you’re a nice guy’ is usually ‘thank you’.”

The words carried none of her usual heat, filled instead with curiosity, and hell, Xander would take her ire a million times over the beautiful, wide-open look on her face right now. “Thank you.”

Another step, and now Tara was right in front of him, close enough to touch. “How come you don’t like being called a nice guy?”

His pulse flared, but that shit about old habits was real.

This time, he stepped toward her, cutting the distance between them to inches. “The standard answer when someone says ‘thank you’ is usually ‘you’re welcome’.”

“Oh,” Tara breathed. Her lips parted to release the sound as a sigh, and suddenly, there was nothing in the universe other than him, her, and the red-hot urge to claim her mouth. “You’re welcome, Xander.”

Review

IT’S STEAMY NOVELLA TIME! I’ve really been enjoying reading some romance novellas lately. I think it’s because I’m toe-ing that line of slumpsville and they’re keeping me entertained and short enough to where I’m not losing focus. It’s just that time of the semester I guess, plus, you know, the world is basically burning. But I was super excited to get an introduction to author Shayla Black with this one!

But where do I even begin with this?! It’s super fast paced but still extremely well written to where you don’t feel like you’re missing anything. Basically, the story fit perfectly into this little novella. Then there’s the characters, they were so great and I loved getting to know them. And lastly there’s the romance! Phew! I loved it!

As I said, this is my first introduction to Shayla Black. I really love these 1001 Nights novellas because they allow me to check out new authors before taking the “full” plunge into their stories (or they just give me more of some of my favorite authors). And so far I have yet to be disappointed by one! So I’m really excited to add some more Black to my reading!

About the Author

Review

Steamy steamy! This book grabbed my attention right away and then I just devoured it and refused to put it down! Not only were the main characters and their stories captivating, but I also really loved the supporting cast! And all around this was just an enjoyable read where there was a healthy mixture of the bad things in life mixed in with the good.

I don’t know why, but I didn’t expect this to be such an insta-love read. The themes are so dark and twisted, that I was expecting a romance along the same lines. But looking at that, I think that the sweetness behind the romance we got was more fitting for the story. The MCs were broken and damaged, so this lush and kind romance was just what they needed.

So yeah, like I said above, I LOVED this supporting cast of characters! They added a lightness to a story that could easily become too heavy. And I LIVED for the bickering between Archer and Elise! I honestly fell in love with them more than any of the others, what can I say? I love an enemies to lovers trope. And knowing that they’ll be the MCs in the next Phoenix novel makes me beyond pumped to read it and dreading the wait!

A Betrayal…

Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. A Choice….

Casteel Da’Neer is known by many names and many faces. His lies are as seductive as his touch. His truths as sensual as his bite. Poppy knows better than to trust him. He needs her alive, healthy, and whole to achieve his goals. But he’s the only way for her to get what she wants—to find her brother Ian and see for herself if he has become a soulless Ascended. Working with Casteel instead of against him presents its own risks. He still tempts her with every breath, offering up all she’s ever wanted. Casteel has plans for her. Ones that could expose her to unimaginable pleasure and unfathomable pain. Plans that will force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself—about him. Plans that could bind their lives together in unexpected ways that neither kingdom is prepared for. And she’s far too reckless, too hungry, to resist the temptation.

A Secret…

But unrest has grown in Atlantia as they await the return of their Prince. Whispers of war have become stronger, and Poppy is at the very heart of it all. The King wants to use her to send a message. The Descenters want her dead. The wolven are growing more unpredictable. And as her abilities to feel pain and emotion begin to grow and strengthen, the Atlantians start to fear her. Dark secrets are at play, ones steeped in the blood-drenched sins of two kingdoms that would do anything to keep the truth hidden. But the choice has never been hers.

A Duty…

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

A Kingdom…

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

Review

Haven’t I already written a review of this book? Yep, yes I have. But I’m still finding myself thinking about it non-stop so HERE I AM with ANOTHER review because I’m insane. But I also just want to brag about having it in paperback now as well. I mean, look at my baby up there all sleek and sexy and thicc. I know I’ve gone a little too far into the obsession realm with this book, but honestly that should just work as a bigger motivator for you to read it!

But anyways, enough of my obsessing and back to the nitty gritty. You know how some series the second book just seems like a filler or it’s just not quite as exciting? Well, A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire blew that stereotype out of the water and into outer space. I mean, as soon as I finished From Blood and Ash (review below) I thought nothing would touch or top that. But then I started, read ahead (bad habit), read back, reread, read ahead some more in fear, and then continued on and finished A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire and I couldn’t believe it when I realized that it was so much better than the first.

I think what made me love this one even better is that the characters were finally able to come into their own. There were no more veiled faces or personas, they were their brutally honest selves. Plus a few new characters that I instantly fell in love with. And then there was still action and some *smexy* scenes (prepare a fan for yourself) that just made this book wholly perfect. Well, actually, I take that back! It’s not perfect because I am now DYING and considering selling my soul for the third book.

Excerpt

“We go home to marry, my Princess.”

As in get married?

To him?

Suddenly, I thought of all those girlish fantasies I’d had before I learned who I was and what was expected of me—daydreams given life because of the love my parents had for one another.

Never once did those little-girl dreams include a proposal that wasn’t remotely an actual proposal. Nor did they incorporate it being announced at a table full of strangers, half of which wanted me dead. And those dreams surely hadn’t involved what had to be the kingdom’s worst—and possibly most insane—non-proposal of marriage to a man currently holding me captive.

Perhaps I had some sort of ailment of the brain. Maybe I was experiencing hallucinations brought on by stress. After all, there had been so much painful death to process. His betrayal to deal with. And I’d just learned I was descended from Atlantia, a kingdom I’d been raised to believe was the source of all the evil and tragedy in the land. Stress-induced hallucinations seemed a far more believable reason than what was actually happening.

All I could do was stare at the larger hand holding my much smaller one. His skin was slightly darker than mine as if kissed by the sun. Years of wielding a sword with deadly, graceful precision had left his palms callused.

He lifted my hand to an indecently well-formed and full mouth. To lips that were somehow soft yet unrelentingly firm. Lips that had spun beautiful words into the air and whispered heated, wicked promises against my bare skin. Lips that had paid homage to the many scars that riddled my body and face.

Lips that had also spoken blood-soaked lies.

Now, that mouth was pressed against the top of my hand in a gesture that I would’ve cherished for an eternity and thought exquisitely tender just days or weeks ago. Simple things like hand-holding or chaste kisses had been forbidden to me. As were being wanted or feeling desire. I had long since accepted that I would never experience those things.

Until him.

I lifted my gaze from our joined hands, from that mouth that was already curving up on one side, hinting at a dimple in the right cheek, and from the slowly parting lips that revealed just a hint of fatally sharp fangs.

His hair brushed the nape of his neck and toppled over his forehead, and the thick strands were such a deep shade of black, it often shone blue in the sunlight. With high and angular cheekbones, a straight nose, and a proud, carved jaw, he often reminded me of the large, graceful cave cat I had seen once in Queen Ileana’s palace as a child. Beautiful, but in the way all wild, dangerous predators were. My heart stammered as my eyes locked onto his, orbs a shade of stunning, cool amber.

I knew I was staring at Hawke— WANT MORE: Download the entire chapter here>> https://BookHip.com/RNZCCJ
