Composite Creatures Tour – Review

About the Book

In a society where self-preservation is as much an art as a science, Norah and Arthur are learning how to co-exist in their new little world. Though they hardly know each other, everything seems to be going perfectly—from the home they’re building together to the ring on Norah’s finger.

But survival in this world is a tricky thing, the air is thicker every day and illness creeps fast through the body. And the earth is becoming increasingly hostile to live in. Fortunately, Easton Grove is here for that in the form of a perfect little bundle to take home and harvest. You can live for as long as you keep it—or her—close.

Review

This book is just so interesting and wild and such a good read! Plus that cover should be enough to intrigue you. I really am a sucker for a good cover and will willingly admit that that is what first drew me to this one. And I’m glad I listened to that because it’s also a really great story.

So, surprise surprise, this is another book that I don’t really want to get much into. It’s just something that you have to let unfold around you as you read it. But just be prepared for an extremely ephemeral and haunting read. It’s one of those books that is just so well written that you could see the events actually unfolding.

This book is both an excellent read as well as one that will make you take a moment to think once you’re done. And that moment might turn into something longer because it’s really one of those stories that will stick with you long after. So this is definitely one that I recommend you pick up!

Unchosen Tour – Review, Favorite Quotes, & Giveaway

About the Book

Book Title: Unchosen
Author: Katharyn Blair
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Release Date: January 26, 2021
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic

Leave her alone. You’ve already destroyed this world. Leave this girl alone.

— Katharyn Blair

Katharyn Blair crafts a fiercely feminist fantasy with a horrifying curse, swoon-worthy sea captains, and the power of one girl to choose her own fate in this contemporary standalone adventure that’s perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and Seafire, and for anyone who has ever felt unchosen.

“Such heart. Bravery. Guts.”

— Katharyn Blair

For Charlotte Holloway, the world ended twice.

The first was when her childhood crush, Dean, fell in love—with her older sister.

The second was when the Crimson, a curse spread through eye contact, turned the majority of humanity into flesh-eating monsters.

Neither end of the world changed Charlotte. She’s still in the shadows of her siblings. Her popular older sister, Harlow, now commands forces of survivors. And her talented younger sister, Vanessa, is the Chosen One—who, legend has it, can end the curse.

When their settlement is raided by those seeking the Chosen One, Charlotte makes a reckless decision to save Vanessa: she takes her place as prisoner.

The word spreads across the seven seas—the Chosen One has been found.

But when Dean’s life is threatened and a resistance looms on the horizon, the lie keeping Charlotte alive begins to unravel. She’ll have to break free, forge new bonds, and choose her own destiny if she has any hope of saving her sisters, her love, and maybe even the world.

Because sometimes the end is just a new beginning.

“He cursed the world. He wanted the world to suffer for my rejection of him.”

— Katharyn Blair

Review

Angst. Angst. Angst. Angst. Angst. Remember when YA books used to be pure angst? Yeah, I do. And if you can’t tell I kind of miss it. But this book took that angst and all of those old YA tropes I still love oh so much and made them fresh and new and revitalized the genre in a way I haven’t seen yet. So yeah, I kind of enjoyed this one. OH! And there are (kind of) ZOMBIES!

“Did she figure out I’ve been lying? Or is it finally time?”

— Katharyn Blair

Where do I even start with this review though? The characters? Yeah, I really liked them. The plot? Well, like I already said, I really liked that. The fantasy/sci-fi/dystopian elements? Yeah, those were perfect. So, basically, this was probably my favorite read of the year so far. There were just so many things that screamed “me” in this one and it just kept delivering throughout the entire book.

“And it’s easier to be mad at him than to be anythign else, so.”

— Katharyn Blair

Everything in this book just works so well together and fit so perfectly into this absolutely amazing plot. And it has those classic/older YA elements that I truly do miss (don’t get me wrong, I’m obviously still a fan of the genre) and made them fresh and modern. So there’s just so much to love about this book that you’re going to just need to read it and find out all of the amazing stuff throughout it.

The Rush’s Edge Review

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

With the help of his commanding officer, a genetically engineered ex-soldier fights back against the government that created him and others like him to be expendable slaves.

Halvor Cullen, a genetically-engineered and technology implanted ex-solider, doesn’t see himself as a hero. After getting out of the service, all he’s interested in is chasing the adrenaline rush that his body was designed to crave. Hal knows he won’t live long anyway; vat soldiers like him are designed to die early or will burnt out from relentlessly seeking the rush. His best friend and former CO, Tyce, is determined not to let that happen and distracts him by work salvaging crashed ships in the Edge. But after a new crewmember—hacker-turned-tecker, Vivi—joins their band of misfits, they find a sphere that downloads an alien presence into their ship…

Review

It’s space time! And what The Rush’s Edge does that I feel a lot of other sci-fi books is that it actually has A LOT of character development! And I feel like that’s where I always struggle to become invested with sci-fi books since they’re often all action and not much else. But this one actually gave me some depth and I loved having the chance to learn all about this misfit gang!

And I mean, how much of a space opera would it be if our story didn’t revolve around a ragtag gang of misfits going against the grain. And while we got a lot of character development like I mentioned, there was still PLENTY of action! It was that harmonious blend between the two that made this such an interesting read. And while this book was set in space there were still those social issues present that we deal with and see on a regular basis. And seeing this team struggle with having everything they thought they knew turned on its head gave such an interesting plot!

You can tell that Smith has a lot of knowledge and love for science fiction because all of that went into this book. And I think that’s why I found this one so enjoyable, I could see how much thought and effort went into weaving this expertly crafter story. And I really look forward to seeing where Smith goes from here!

The Sensation Review

About the Book

Last time she investigated the saints of the Solme Complex. This time it’s the sinners of the Sensation… Presenting the second Salvi Brentt novel from award-winning author, Amanda Bridgeman.

A series of brutal murders has the homicide division of San Francisco’s Hub 9 working overtime. But as the bodies mount, they begin to question whether the attacks are random or somehow connected.

When one of their own falls victim, Detective Salvi Brentt and the Hub 9 homicide team join forces with the narcotics and cyber divisions to track down those responsible. They soon discover a volatile new drug-tech experience, involving black market neural implants, has hit the streets, causing the epidemic of violence and missing persons.

With the clock ticking and the bodies piling up, Salvi must go deep undercover in the seedy Sensation club scene to found out who is behind it. But in the secretive playgrounds of the rich and powerful, some will stop at nothing to protect their empire…

Review

I’m backkk with book two and I’m seriously obsessed with this cover! Just like with the first book (you can read my review on my blog!) I was instantly engaged and involved in the story. And it doesn’t fail to live up to the first book in the series, The Sensation definitely stands on it’s own as another outstanding part of this series.

This second installment in the series continues to expand on our knowledge of the world and introduces us to new and old characters. And while there are the familiar aspects in this book, there is still plenty of new things to draw our attention. But I can’t talk about it too much because I don’t want to give anything away!

I find that oftentimes the second book in a series falls into the “sophomore slump.” But The Sensation definitely didn’t fall into that trap and really stands out! I loved being able to go further into this world and get a deeper understanding of all of the horror in the series.

The Subjugate Review

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

In a small religious community rocked by a spree of shocking murders, Detectives Salvi Brentt and Mitch Grenville find themselves surrounded by suspects. The Children of Christ have a tight grip on their people, and the Solme Complex neurally edit violent criminals – Subjugates – into placid servants called Serenes. In a town where purity and sin, temptation and repression live side by side, everyone has a motive. But as the bodies mount up, the frustrated detectives begin to crack under the pressure: their demons are coming to light, and who knows where that blurred line between man and monster truly lies.

Review

This book is just so incredibly amazing! It’s one of those combinations where if done incorrectly it wouldn’t work at all. BUT, it was done better than correctly and just: wow. I think what made this book for me is that while it is sci-fi, it is very easy to see that this could be a plausible downfall to society. Plus I’m a sucker for crime novels and it’s been far too long since I’ve read one. So this was a perfect blend of genres for me!

I have a weird interest in cults, and this story just screams cult-y. So you know I was hooked right from the start. And this society was just so interesting to learn about! I don’t want to give anything away, but it’s wild and scarily plausible. It’s got new things we would expect to see in the future, yet as we see even today, the people believe that a simpler (and more restrictive) way of life may be better. There are so many nuances that seem to have been pulled from some of our more “closed off” communities.

Outside of the strange individuals we meet in this story, we also get an intense murder mystery. But that’s all I’m going to say on that because you just need to read it. And for those of you who may not explore the sci-fi genre all too often this might be the perfect fit! There are some sci-fi elements, but there is also so much more to this story!

Review

Aliens, space, and adventure. What more could you want?! This book has all of the twists and turns that you would expect from an enthralling scifi, plus it reminds me of a Star Trek but YA (where my trekkies at?!). But this is definitely a unique story on it’s own that will take you light years away from the mess we’re living in!

I absolutely LOVED the characters in this one! I think the sign of a great scifi read for me is when I absolutely adore the characters. There’s just something about a rag tag team of people going on an adventure (insert gif of Bilbo Baggins, but not really cause I’m lazy). AND THE PLOT! This book starts right off the bat crazy and just keeps going from there. These two combined make for such an interesting book and start to what I hope will be a wonderful series.

This is one of those fun and quirky reads that you can just take some time with and enjoy. While scifi isn’t always my first choice genre it is something I’m trying to change. BUT, I ALWAYS enjoy a book set in space with some alien craziness.

The Hive Queen Tour – Review, Favorite Quotes, & Giveaway

About the Book

The Hive Queen (The Bond Trilogy, #2)
by Robin Kirk
Publisher: Blue Crow Books
Release Date: September 1st 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, SciFi

It’s for her daughter, we’ll say. For the future. For love.

Robin Kirk

In the second book in the INDIE-award-winning Bond Trilogy, warrior Fir leads his brothers on a quest for salvation that will threaten everything he holds dear.

As you know, I love surprises.

Robin Kirk

After the battle that toppled the Weave, warrior Fir leads his brothers east to escape servitude, or worse—death at the hands of rival warriors. They search for the fabled Master of Men who promises freedom for men in the Weave. But their quest leads them to a foe more dangerous than they could have imagined.

When the beautiful Hive Queen, Odide, bespells Fir, he’s compelled to betray his brothers—and risks dooming them all to an unspeakable fate. To survive, Fir must choose between his loyalty to his brothers, his allegiance to the Queen, and his love for Dinitra.

But salvation is not what it seems. When the worlds of the Hive and the Master collide, it triggers a devastating betrayal that leaves Fir with an impossible choice: can he sacrifice his brothers for the love he thought he could never have?

We’re going to find this Master, find a home, no matter what stands in our way.

Robin Kirk

Review

This series is one of those series that’s got a little bit of everything and is still expertly done. ANDDDDD, THERE’S A MAP! You know it’s an automatic win for me when there’s a map in a book. Plus this map is so cool. I’m not going to spoil it though, so you just need to get these books so you can see it. But anyways, I also really loved the switch in perspective in The Hive Queen over to Fir. I think it really added even more depth to the series.

I vow: not one brother more will die because of me.

Robin Kirk

The second book takes us on an even grander adventure than the first. And the world building stands up as well. Much like the first book, Kirk takes what we know of this world, flips it on its head, and takes us even deeper than ever imaginable. Yet through all of this world building the story doesn’t slow down in the slightest. There’s just action followed by more action and topped with a dash more action.

For us, there’s no going back.

Robin Kirk

The writing style of this book is so unique and I’m not quite sure how to describe it. In a sense it’s very bare, but not in a way that makes you feel as if you are missing out on anything. It almost has a sort of ephemeral quality, which pairs really nicely with the story and the concept of the world.

About the Author

Kirk is the author of The Bond, the first in a fantasy trilogy published by Blue Crow Publishing. Foreward Reviews awarded The Bond its Bronze award for best YA in 2018. Book II, The Hive Queen, is due out in August 2020. Kirk’s other books include More Terrible Than Death: Massacres, Drugs and America’s War in Colombia (PublicAffairs) and The Monkey’s Paw: New Chronicles from Peru (University of Massachusetts Press). She coedits the The Peru Reader: History, Culture, Politics (Duke University) and is an editor of Duke University Press’s World Readers series.

Kirk is a Faculty Co-Director of the Duke Human Rights Center at the Franklin Humanities Institute and is a founding member of the Pauli Murray Project, an initiative of the center that seeks to use the legacy of this Durham daughter to examine the region’s past of slavery, segregation and continuing economic inequality. An author and human rights advocate, Kirk is a lecturer in Duke’s Department of Cultural Anthropology.

The Parada had been lost for almost two hundred years before they recovered the ship, drifting in stygian interstellar darkness, and brought her home again.

But that was not the miracle.

The miracle was that the crew was still alive.

That was also the problem.

Six crew members went out on the Parada, Earth’s first starship. All contact was lost, and the ship vanished for almost two centuries. When the Parada’s successor found the drifting ship and somehow managed to bring it home, the six crew members were not only still alive but barely older, due to the time dilation effects of near-FTL travel. Their return was a miracle – but it could not be revealed to the waiting world. The problem was, six individuals went out to the stars. More than seventy fractured personalities came back.

Psychologist Stella Froud and Jesuit Father Philip Carter were recruited as part of the team assembled to investigate the mystery, and to try and help the Parada’s crew understand their condition and possibly reverse it. What they discovered was a deepening mystery, and very soon they found themselves forced to take sides in a conflict that nobody could have possibly predicted. Their world would never be the same again.

Praise for The Second Star

“Like its cast of returned starfarers, this rich and continually surprising novel is many things at once: a religiously-inflected first contact story; an engaging psychological mystery; a glimpse of the future through the eyes of the past; and a moving tale about the difficulties of homecoming. I highly recommend it. ” —Matt Ruff, author of Set This House in order

“The Second Star is a grandly deep wallow in multiple personality disorder material. Dr. Stella Froud is wonderful as she studies six star-faring humans who come home fractured.” —Jennifer Stevenson, author of Walking on Sunshine

Review

Hey look, it’s me coming back with another review on another science fiction book! I’m so proud of how I’ve been sticking to trying out the genre this year. I find that I really like science fiction books that explore more than just traditional sci-fi aspects and elements. Which is probably why I enjoyed The Second Star so much!

Coming back from space is unimaginable to me, but add in getting lost in space and coming back with multiple personalities just makes the whole thing even scarier. I mean, think about it. What would you do if you were lost in space? What would you see? What would happen? It’s like an eternal internal debate.

This was definitely a high stakes and thrilling read. It just made me think the entire time I was reading the story and learning about all of the characters. It also reiterated my belief that I never want to go into space. There is just so much to discover from within these pages.

Delphi Federation Tour

About the Book

Delphi Federation
Book 6: Delphi in Space Series
by Bob Blanton

LATEST BOOK IN EPIC SPACE SAGA EXPLORES HOW
ALL LIFEFORMS CAN COEXIST

On the continued quest for a harmonized society on Earth and beyond, author Bob Blanton brings attention to the civilians most in need of peace, societal advancements, and equality with the sixth installment of his popular Delphi in Space series, Delphi Federation (April 7, 2020 [Paperback], April 21, 2020 [eBook]).

The best-selling science fiction series follows two brothers, Marc and Blake McCormack, who unleash new technology that will forever improve our dying environment while making a nice profit to boot. With the arrival of Marc’s daughter Catie, they begin introducing the new technology while fighting off enemies and foreign countries who fear the technology will disrupt their economies. It’s not long before the alien rebels from Paraxea come to claim the technology for themselves, starting a galactic war of the ages that spans the next five books Blanton has planned.

In Delphi Federation, the McCormacks have successfully defeated the Paraxean rebels, but now face an even tougher question: where do they go from here? As they are now responsible for 1.5 million alien lives, they must search for other inventions and advancements in technology that will help them find a good home for the Paraxeans.  All while they continue to disperse technology across the globe.  Their plans hit a snag when their clinic in Guatemala gets taken over by a cartel boss.

As moving to space, along with other technological and economical advancements, may not be decades away like we once assumed, Blanton explores the benefits of space habitation through the McCormack family’s epic adventures, leaving any space lover itching to pack their bags. With his forceful yet focused writing style, Delphi Federation also puts a spotlight on various underdeveloped countries and habitats outside our atmosphere, encouraging readers to appreciate what we have in the present and pay attention to a future that’s more reality than space fantasy. When the sky is no longer the limit, the possibilities to create a better world are endless.

Author Interview

Q: What makes Delphi Federation and the Delphi in Space Series different than other science fiction books that take place in space?

Bob Blanton: I focus on fun and adventure while keeping the science as realistic as possible. Generally, I find some scientific basis for my alternate science. These characters have grown throughout the series, but from the beginning I painted them as capable, making the situations as realistic as possible, saying what would be the likely response to a given situation.

Q: The characters in the series live in space, and some scientists and entrepreneurs believe we’re closer than ever to making that a reality. What are your thoughts on having a society in space?

BB: Outer Space is just another piece of real estate.  We’re already learning about manufacturing processes that are best suited to space and microgravity through the ISS2.  The asteroid belt will undoubtedly be an important source for raw materials that are becoming even more scarce on Earth.  Investors are viewing the first forays into space as more adventure, novelty oriented.  Eventually we’ll have a manufacturing presence which will require a larger, more permanent presence.

Q: Many science fiction books warn about technological advancements over time, but the series does the opposite. What do you think are some advantages of technology?

BB: Technology is a means to an end.  It doesn’t have a political or emotional component, that comes from people who are trying to avoid the disruption it causes in one’s life.  It’s difficult to predict what will happen as it becomes integrated into our lives.  Just imagine the first portable phones, they were huge, but who would leave the house today without their smartphone.  Technology unleashes the human mind to accomplish great and amazing things, unfortunately criminals also have imaginations.

Q: You also highlight different regions in your book that are more vulnerable and may not be able to handle such advancements, such as Ukraine and Guatemala. What is your hope in bringing awareness to these countries and their issues?

BB:  It’s easy to look at underdeveloped countries and write their situations off as their own fault.  That ignores the enormous damage that a colonial economy did and does to countries that are relegated to sources of raw material and cheap labor.  The average people in those countries are doing the best they can with the hand they’ve been dealt.  When presented with unbiased opportunities, they can step up and make a much better life for themselves.  Unfortunately, the wealthy and powerful in those countries prefer the status quo.  Corruption favors them; who would clean their houses if everyone had a high school education.
