The Bone Thief Tour – Review, Favorite Quotes, & Giveaway

About the Book

The Bone Thief (The Bone Charmer #2)
by Breeana Shields
Publisher: Page Street Kids
Release Date: May 26th 2020
Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult

“I was absolutely swept away by the world of The Bone Charmer.” – Kendare Blake, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Three Dark Crowns series

A deft exploration of the weight of grief and cost of revenge, Breeana Shields’s Bone Charmer duology reaches its spine-tingling conclusion in this high-octane fantasy-thriller.

I’ve always thought I’d do anything to have her back.

But would I?

Breeana Shields

Saskia returns to Ivory Hall to train in bone magic, determined to stop Latham from gaining the power of all three Sights—past, present, and future. But danger lurks within the fortress’s marrow. Trials are underway for the apprentices, and the tasks feel specifically engineered to torment Saskia, which is exactly what Latham wants.

He sounds as lonely as I feel.

Breeana Shields

As she grows increasingly more suspicious, her thirst for revenge becomes all-consuming. Together with the friends she can trust and the boy she loved in another lifetime, Saskia traces clues from Latham’s past to determine what he’ll do next. Their search leads them across Kastelia and brings them to a workshop housing a vast collection of horrors, including the bones Latham stole from Gran, and the knowledge that the future isn’t all that’s in jeopardy—but the past as well.

I’ve felt alone for so long now that being surrounded by people who care about me is an unfamiliar sensation. But a welcome one.

Breeana Shields

Review

Gah, why do duologies always make me so happy? I always thought I was a series type of person, but for some reason I always find that I REALLY love duologies. The Bone Charmer duology is definitely something that I wish I was seeing more frequently from people! It’s so unique and amazing written, yet I feel as if the books are still relatively undiscovered. So, I’m here today to try and convince you to check this duology out!

If I want to survive I’ll have to save myself.

Breeana Shields

Ok, but let’s talk about the magic system. I mean, it’s so unique! Plus anything related to bones always makes me think of City of Bones and automatically makes my shadowhunters obsessed self happy. But anyways, I always find it so intriguing when people only have one specific type of magic. I don’t know, it just makes more sense to me that that would be the case. I mean, whenever I think of what type of magic I’d want it’s always something very specific.

I have blood on my hands.

Breeana Shields

But this series is just so intricately interwoven and I was just enamored with the world. Plus the writing was just so beautiful. It was flow-y and swept you away without being too overworked. There’s just something about fantasy mixed with an almost quest-like storyline that will always remain an endearing classic with me.

About the Author

Breeana Shields is an author of fantasy novels for teens including The Bone Charmer, The Bone Thief, Poison’s Kiss, and Poison’s Cage.

When she’s not writing, Breeana loves reading, traveling, and playing board games with her extremely competitive family. She lives near Washington D.C. with her husband, her three children, and two adorable, but spoiled dogs.

The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly Tour – Review, Favorite Quotes, & Giveaway

About the Book

The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly
by Jamie Pacton
Publisher: Page Street Kids
Release Date: May 5th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance

And I suddenly know exactly what I need to do.

Jamie Pacton

Kit Sweetly slays sexism, bad bosses, and bad luck to become a knight at a medieval-themed restaurant.

Working as a wench―i.e. waitress―at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college.

Is the Girl Knight going to end up dead in a laundromat?

Jamie Pacton

Company policy allows only guys to be knights. So when Kit takes her brother’s place and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But the Girl Knight won’t go down without a fight. As other wenches join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they’ll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval―if they don’t get fired first.

This. Is. My. Life.

How. Very. Not. According. To. Plan.

Jamie Pacton

Review

I have to admit that as soon as I saw this book I fell in love with it. It was just one of those books that I immediately knew I’d love and adore. It’s just one of those books that will fully entertain you while also portraying a fierce feminist story. Plus this book kept making me laugh, and while I always love books that make me laugh I needed that especially right now.

With a deep breath and a prayer to the badass ladies of the Middle Ages, I hit Send.

Jamie Pacton

So, as a woman I can completely feel for Kit with dealing with sexism in the workplace. So I really appreciated that aspect of the story. It’s always exciting to see the underdog succeed in the workplace and put others in their place. But what I think this book did the best in was making Kit seem like the actual teenager she really is. I always like when I read a book and the character shockingly acts their age instead of some extremely well versed philosopher. But, while this book claims to be a romantic contemporary, I feel like the romance wasn’t really the forefront of this book. Which I really didn’t mind, I mean there was already so many other aspects in this book that it didn’t really feel necessary.

Have you ever thought about jousting?

Jamie Pacton

I’m always a little wary of books that boldly declare themselves to be feminist. I know that sound backwards, but I just don’t like when they get too preachy and the story gets set aside. I much prefer when books infuse the feminism around the story. I was glad that this story did just that and effortlessly juggled the kitschy story, the feministic undertones, while also supporting a diverse cast of characters. I think the mix of contemporary and historical really helped make this story and sets it apart from other current contemporary books.

About the Author

Jamie Pacton writes all sorts of books: dark, feminist YA fantasy; contemporary YA stories with a funny + geeky bent; funny MG adventure-fantasy; and, even the occasional adult rom-com. She was a Pitch Wars mentee in 2015 and she mentored YA in 2016, 2017, and 2018. She grew up minutes away from the National Storytelling Center in the mountains of East Tennessee; she’s the oldest of ten kids; and, she currently lives in rural Wisconsin with her husband, their two kids, and a dog named Lego. The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly (forthcoming May 5, 2020) is her Young Adult debut.

Woven in Moonlight Tour – Review, Favorite Quotes, & Giveaway

About the Book

The kind of night that makes you want to get lost somewhere. The kind of night that invites adventure and misbehaving.

Isabel Ibañez

Woven in Moonlight

by Isabel Ibañez
Publisher: Page Street Books
Release Date: January 7th 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

I belong to no one.

Isabel Ibañez

A lush tapestry of magic, romance, and revolución, drawing inspiration from Bolivian politics and history.

Ximena is the decoy Condesa, a stand-in for the last remaining Illustrian royal. Her people lost everything when the usurper, Atoc, used an ancient relic to summon ghosts and drive the Illustrians from La Ciudad. Now Ximena’s motivated by her insatiable thirst for revenge, and her rare ability to spin thread from moonlight.

She can read the stars, whereas I merely copy them.

Isabel Ibañez

When Atoc demands the real Condesa’s hand in marriage, it’s Ximena’s duty to go in her stead. She relishes the chance, as Illustrian spies have reported that Atoc’s no longer carrying his deadly relic. If Ximena can find it, she can return the true aristócrata to their rightful place.

She hunts for the relic, using her weaving ability to hide messages in tapestries for the resistance. But when a masked vigilante, a warm-hearted princess, and a thoughtful healer challenge Ximena, her mission becomes more complicated. There could be a way to overthrow the usurper without starting another war, but only if Ximena turns her back on revenge—and her Condesa.

Anger and fear both war within me. I pray to Luna that my anger will win.

Isabel Ibañez

Review

The words rip out of me. “Kill them all.” . . . I wish I could have given the order twice.

Isabel Ibañez

Ok, so as soon as I started Woven in Moonlight I was hooked. Like, immediately messaged my friend and told her to read it hooked. Lately I’ve been seeking out books that are unique and new, and this one just blew any expectations I had for finding something like that out of the water! The magic system was so cool, and never have I wanted the magic of a character as much as I want Ximena’s Luna magic!

We stay like that, looking at each other as if we’ve discovered a new species of alpaca.

Isabel Ibañez

Now, while I’m on the topic of Ximena let me discuss some of my inner thoughts. The first thing that made me love her was after a certain moment in the beginning made me go, “dannggggg, this girl is tough!” Which, in my language, is basically the highest honor. I found myself rooting for her, being sad for her, and ready for her to kick some a**! I also want to take some time to discuss my other favorite: Rumi. I know he wasn’t supposed to be likable when he was introduced, but I couldn’t help it and he made me smirk. And he continued to make me smirk. And giggle. And basically just fawn over him. I love his and Ximena’s banter back and forth, and I practically died in a fit of giggles every time she told him to wash his clothes.

The moonlight slants, turning supple and smooth, bending and twisting as it lengthens.

Isabel Ibañez

I want to say so much more, but I don’t want to give any major plot points away! Which is probably why this review just sounds like I’m fangirling instead of talking about specifics. I want you to just go into this book with the vague plot and find yourself immersed in all of the twists and turns and intrigue. Go on this adventure with Ximena and feel as she does.

I want to be heard too. Sometimes, when my temper gets the best of me, I’m secretly pleased. That’s the real me breaking through the mask.

Isabel Ibañez

Finally, I pray to Luna that this world is expanded on! Woven in Moonlight was written as a standalone, but by golly do I need more! I have questions! I need answers! I need to learn more! I want the magic expanded! I want the history! I want to see more of a certain relationship! AAAAACCCCKKKK!!!!

About the Author

Isabel Ibañez was born in Boca Raton, Florida, and is the proud daughter of two Bolivian immigrants. A true word nerd, she received her degree in creative writing and has been a Pitch Wars mentor for three years. She currently lives in Winter Park, Florida, with her husband, their adorable dog, and a serious collection of books.

Tour Schedule

To give up my life for her should it come to that. And despite my duty, despite the long years of living as somebody else, I love her. As a sister, as my future queen.

About the Book

by Naomi Hughes
Publisher: Page Street Kids
Release Date: November 5th 2019

Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction

After an attack on earth, all reflective surfaces become weapons to release monsters, causing a planet-wide ban on mirrors. Despite the danger, the demand rises, and 17-year-old Marty Callahan becomes a distributor in an illegal mirror trade―until he’s caught by the mayor’s son, whose slate is far from clean. Both of them are exiled for their crimes to one of the many abandoned cities overrun by fog. But they soon realize their thoughts influence their surroundings and their deepest fears begin to manifest.

With fast pacing and riveting characters, this is a book that you’ll finish in one sitting.

Review

So, I don’t typically read sci-fi books but this book was an exception, which I think can tell you how good it was? I mean, if my opinion is even worth anything. The plot was amazing and, while I typically like my Aliens Luxen style, I was thoroughly intrigued by everything in this story! There was some anxiety and OCD representation from the squishable (this is a term of endearment for me) Marty and I felt that. I particularly loved the peek into his mind (because, dude, can he see into my mind? It looked too familiar) and how he actually applied some coping strategies from when he was able to get therapy… You know, before everything went cuckoo banana pants.

I have to say though, even with aliens invading earth, the most unrealistic part of this story was that a small island in Florida would be saved. When the scenery was being described I was thinking, “huh, this seems like it’s in Florida… But that can’t be right!” And lo and behold, IT WAS. I was shook. I couldn’t believe that the state I am currently settled in would survive. Maybe that makes me a pessimist? Maybe I just keep thinking that Florida is just going to wash away in a massive flood? I don’t know, but I giggled thinking that an island in Florida would survive an alien invasion… But then again, it makes sense?

But aside from my well intentioned snarkiness (welcome to my mind, this is what it’s like inside), this book was amazing! It has made me realize that I really need to expand what I read (which I have been really focused on doing lately) and open myself up to reading books that have *gasp* mc who are males or *double gasp* get over my random aversion to sci-fi. I don’t know why I am like this, but thank you to Refraction for opening my eyes to new wonders!

Hey! I’m Naomi Hughes, writer of quirky young adult fiction (usually involving physics and/or unicorns). I live in the Midwest US, a region I love even though it tries to murder me with tornadoes every spring. When not writing, my hobbies include reading (of course), traveling, and geeking out over Marvel superheroes and certain time-traveling Doctors. My debut YA sci-fi standalone novel, Afterimage, is available now from Page Street Publishing. My next novel, Refraction (also a standalone YA sci-fi), comes out in Nov 2019. Night Spinner Review

Night Spinner by Addie Thorley is a magical retelling of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Now, for me an amazing retelling is a retelling that I can’t outwardly see as a direct retelling of the story. And Night Spinner definitely hit the mark for this!

So, this is a story about redemption and finding yourself along the way. It is about discovering who you are as well as those you thought you were close to. Night Spinner begins at an ending. Enebish has given up on everything but living out her days at a monastery after committing an atrocious crime: losing control of her night spinner power and taking out a merchant caravan. Broken and scarred she believe that this is all she deserves, but when faced with the opportunity to once again become the warrior she once was she cannot resist. Thus Enebish sets out on a journey to find Temujin, the notorious criminal stealing from the Imperial Army.

So, I have to warn you that this book started off a little rocky for me. There were a lot of descriptions and I kept finding myself confused. But around 50 pages in the story really started to pick up and I was hooked. This story started off with a bang and the momentum just kept building. Once I understood the story and magic system more I found myself deeply engrossed in this momentum. There are twists and turns all over the place and it is just a wild ride.

Also, these characters are the definition of morally gray. They’re all unique in their own way but they all have negative qualities. Its amazing. I love when characters are not flat and one dimensional!

But, overall, you really need to read this book! It’s seriously amazing and I NEED the next one immediately. Like, I want to continue on this adventure right now!
