About the Book
Fifteen-year-old Ben Leung can’t believe a girl like Kai Gupta would want to be his friend, let alone his girlfriend. They have absolutely nothing in common. He’s Chinese; she’s British Indian. He’s a Star Trek nerd; she’s a model.
When Kai is offered a modeling career that requires her to move overseas, she persuades Ben to come along. They hatch a plot. They pinky promise.
Everything is running according to plan… until it isn’t.
Can a young love survive 7,235 miles between Hong Kong and Los Angeles?
Theoretically, it can.
From the author of MY LEA and I WON’T BREAK comes a geeky and tender story about falling in love, fulfilling family duties, and chasing dreams.
Holy Spock this book! This week, in case you can’t tell, has been…. well, a WEEK. You know, one of *those.* So I really needed something fun and amusing to help get me out of the funk I’ve been shoved under. But it also might be my Trekkie heart singing at FINALLY getting some Star Trek appreciation in a sea of Star Wars lovers. But anyways, this book is basically a love story to all of us nerds out there.
So the first thing that made me love this book was how diverse it was. I mean, we get a mixed race couple where neither person is white! Thank you! Secondly, I love how this book was predominantly set in Hong Kong. It just goes to show that even if it’s not set in the US or a magical world the characters and culture can still be relatable. But back to our couple, long distance relationships are difficult. And I love how supportive and open about his fears Ben is! We get a male main character who isn’t afraid to show some emotion, even if he is afraid of being a klutz.
I love how this book spans multiple years. We get to see the ins and outs of this relationship as well as the ups and downs as they struggle with long distance, missing one another, and not wanting to risk forcing the other to give up on their dreams. Overall this is just a wonderfully delightful read.
