A decade that transformed America
The Sixties shook America to its foundation – the assassination of an idealistic young president, a tragic and unpopular war, a battle for civil rights, a cosmic clash of riots and burning cities, and an explosion of sex, drugs and rock’n roll.
For four young people, the Sixties is a decade of promise and freedom. For orphaned Troy, it’s the joy of living with his new family and exploring the world of flight and outer space. For Tara, the girl he loves, the power of song as she evolves into a rock’n roll star. For his new brother, Mick, a football hero and rebel, a time to question everything, including the fast-growing war in Vietnam. And for Daisy, the girl Mick loves, a chance to fight for equality, join the Peace Corps, and expand her study of the human mind.
America is the first of Mike Bond’s seven-volume historical novel series, capturing the victories and heartbreaks of the last 70 years and of our nation’s most profound upheavals since the Civil War – a time that defined the end of the 20th Century and where we are today.
Through the wild, joyous, heartbroken and visionary lives of four young people and many others, the Sixties come alive again, as do its questions: what is life? What is freedom? What was lost, what was won?

You know, I really love books set in this time period. It was just such an interesting and compelling time period that I love seeing snippets of stories based off of. And the history in America was extremely rich and compelling. And this is really one of those reads that it feels like you’re catching a real glimpse into someones life.
Now, what I mean by that is that this isn’t one of those books that’s going to have action and adventure and drama around every single corner. It’s really a story about these individuals and the life they lived in this time period. And I actually really appreciated that because it’s kind of a nice break from all of the overly dramatic stories that are out there. Sometimes you just want to take a stroll through a story versus a high speed chase, you know?
Anyways, I really love getting a chance to read another book set in this time period and just getting a further glimpse into the history surrounding it. And I really enjoyed this one!

“The characters offer positive, realistic LGBTQIA+ representation―especially nonbinary identities and characters still exploring their identities. Refreshingly, the characters also feel like generally-woke-but-still-imperfect humans. Wickedly funny and thrilling in turns; perfect for readers coming-of-age online.” ―Kirkus, starred review
“Kritzer’s take on a benevolent AI is both whimsical and poignant. An entertaining, heart-filled exploration of today’s online existence and privacy concerns.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review
“Smart, sly, scary, and irrepressibly good fun, this novel has everything I’ve ever wanted from a story: it is a cerebral, funny, tender, big-idea delight. I can’t wait for you to read it.”―Kelly Barnhill, Newbery Award-winning author of The Girl Who Drank the Moon
“An absolutely charming and incredibly gripping, superbly plotted YA thriller.” ―Cory Doctorow, New York Timesbestselling author of Little Brother
“Kritzer’s flawless collection taps deep wells of emotion and wonder…. Her work is indisputably speculative, but it’s a perfect entry point to the genre for readers who prefer fantastical and futuristic elements to stay more in the background, with human (and robotic) feelings always at the fore. This splendid treat is not to be missed.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review, on Cat Pictures Please and Other Stories
I was honestly surprised at how excited I was to read this one! Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I wasn’t thrilled to see this book it’s just that I’m so shocked at just how much I enjoy this series when it’s something that is typically out of my reading comfort zone. But there’s something about these books that are just so good and alluring!
This book is just as good as the first and I loved being able to follow up with all of the characters (plus some new additions). The story really takes off right from the start and off we go on another adventure. But what I think I like most about this series is the sense of realness to it. Like, clearly, the subject matter isn’t QUITE something you see every day, but in the same sense… we’re not far off are we? But anyways, what I really meant is that the characters are so relatable. They’re living breathing humans that have their quirks and their individuality instead of the overly… everything… we sometimes see in books. And I think that that’s why I find this series so fresh.
This was definitely a wonderful follow up book and I really look forward to seeing what Kritzer comes up with next! I mean anyone who can get me out of my reading comfort zone AND make me fall in love with it on top of it is someone to watch!

Virtutis gloria merces
Translation: Glory is the reward of valor
When given power, what would you be willing to sacrifice for the greater good?

She barely made it out of the first few weeks of on-the-job training before her powers got her in trouble.
Hunted as a magical vigilante, the Kims sacrificed to keep her safe.
Kera hunts criminals in the darkness of LA, but will she be able to hide the signature of her powers, too?
Having made the decision to come clean with a boyfriend, she must now live with the results.
With everything happening, Kera is balancing her sanity as well. Will magic be enough to help her come out on top?
Of course, she hopes. Because the other way lies madness.

I mean, the title on this book alone should tell you it’s one you need to read. But this book really takes a strong female lead to the next level with an expertly woven story surrounding out main character. And boy oh boy is there a lot of action packed throughout this one, so buckle up because you’re in for an exciting ride!
There’s so much to unpack with this story, but I really think it all boils down to there being a little bit of something for everyone. And I mean magic, powerful females, action, and more. And instead of falling into the trap of throwing everything together and hoping it all works, this book really took all of these elements and made them its own. So, basically what I’m trying to say is that it works and with all of these elements that could easily go so wrong it all seemed to go so right.
I really enjoyed this book and just fell right into the story. It’s one of those books that you can pick up, easily read, and find yourself entertained by the story.

PJ Manney concludes her visionary Philip K. Dick Award–nominated series of a world at war, a virtual search for identity, and the future of humanity.
Five years ago, bioengineer Peter Bernhardt spearheaded an innovation in nanotechnology that changed the course of evolution. Until everything was taken from him—his research, the people he loved, and finally his life. Uploaded as an artificial intelligence, Peter is alive again thanks to a critical reactivation by fellow AI Carter Potsdam.
But a third sentient computer program, Major Tom, is tearing the United States apart, destroying its leaders and its cities. Major Tom’s mission: rebuild a new America from the ruins and reign as uncontested monarch. Carter knows that only a revolutionary like Peter can reverse the damage to a country set on fire.
Caught in a virtual world between an alleged ally and an enemy, pieces of Peter’s former self remain: the need for vengeance, empathy for the subjugated people of a derelict world, and doubt in everything he’s been led to believe. To rescue what’s left, he’ll need to once again advance the notion of evolution and to expand the meaning of being human—by saving humanity.
(R)EVOLUTION Scientist Peter Bernhardt has dedicated his life to nanotechnology, the science of manipulating matter on the atomic scale. As the founder of Biogineers, he is on the cusp of revolutionizing brain therapies with microscopic nanorobots that will make certain degenerative diseases become a thing of the past. But after his research is stolen by an unknown enemy, seventy thousand people die in Las Vegas in one abominable moment. No one is more horrified than Peter, as this catastrophe sets in motion events that will forever change not only his life but also the course of human evolution.
Peter’s company is torn from his grasp as the public clamors for his blood. Desperate, he turns to an old friend, who introduces him to the Phoenix Club, a cabal of the most powerful people in the world. To make himself more valuable to his new colleagues, Peter infuses his brain with experimental technology, exponentially upgrading his mental prowess and transforming him irrevocably.
As he’s exposed to unimaginable wealth and influence, Peter’s sense of reality begins to unravel. Do the club members want to help him, or do they just want to claim his technology? What will they do to him once they have their prize? And while he’s already evolved beyond mere humanity, is he advanced enough to take on such formidable enemies and win?
In the guise of political revolutionary Thomas Paine, bioengineer Peter Bernhardt brought down the corrupt and powerful Phoenix Club—and then turned revolution into evolution by becoming the first artificial human intelligence: Major Tom. In the two years since Major Tom revealed his digital existence and spread his freedom manifesto, he has been revered as a god and vilified as a demon. The United States and Europe have splintered into ideologically independent regions. Russia and China prepare to expand their empires.
In the midst of the chaos, pirates attack a seastead in the Pacific Ocean, capturing one of Major Tom’s allies. A mysterious and powerful group wages a secret war. To rescue his ally, Major Tom must first regain his own humanity and somehow save a species he no longer identifies with, and which seems determined to destroy itself.

“PJ Manney has written the techno-thriller for the 21st century. Trading in robots for nanobots, (R)EVOLUTION deftly evokes a believable future in which nanotech gives the hero his best and only chance against enemies foreign and domestic. “Futurist lecturer Manney’s intriguing and fast-paced debut takes a close look at possible consequences of sophisticated bioengineering. […] With poignancy and sensitivity, Manney constructs an intricate and adventurous plot. The characterization is rich, with an uncommon and welcome depth found in the protagonist… Fans of gosh-wow SF will devour this novel all the way to the startling ending.” —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY on (R)EVOLUTION
I’m back (finally) with another review! I took a little bit off from all things bookish because, well, I’m beat. I feel like I say it every semester, but this was the worst semester. But I’m just marginally refreshed and here to talk about this interesting book! As you can see it’s not my typical read, BUT I’m trying to carry over my goal from last year of reading more books like this.
Now, just because this book isn’t my typical genre doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the book! Because I actually really did. It has such a rich story within and there was also enough description and background for me to easily fall into the story, which I think is what I usually struggle the most with any sci-fi type of book. And while this one is clearly an ending to the series I actually kind of prefer the slower more introspective pace of this one.
Overall this is a great series and I look forward to what Manney comes up with in the future! There were so many unique and interesting elements to these that I was really hooked throughout.

This. Book. Is. So. Good. And it’s honestly what I’ve needed. I don’t know about you, but reading for me this year has been weird so far. I’ve just found myself so stressed and all over the place and honestly my reading has done the same thing. And this book just reeled me right back in with a style that just really takes it back to what I love to read most. I mean I loveeee fantasy, as you can probably tell, but I also love a really intricately woven story and world as well as some dark murderous aspects. And this book delivered.
Ok, now this book is fantasy but it’s not TOO fantasy. So fantasy wary readers I urge you to give this one a try. And fantasy lovers, like myself, I also urge you to read this because you’ll still love it. Especially if you’re into a sort of steam punk, serial killer, almost want to say anime (you know that niche) vibe. Plus I really loved the characters. So there’s just a really excellent combination of character development, plot (which sometimes gets lost in fantasy I will admit), and world building (yay!).
Now, I just have to say I need more now. I mean, I know we’re getting more to this series but I’m an impatient person at heart. Especially when I really find something I like. But alas, I shall wait. And I hope to convince you to wait along with me.

The highly anticipated new novel from the multiple award-winning author of Queen of the Owls . . .
What if you had a second chance at the very thing you thought you’d renounced forever? How steep a price would you be willing to pay?
Susannah’s career as a pianist has been on hold for nearly sixteen years, ever since her son was born. An adoptee who’s never forgiven her birth mother for not putting her first, Susannah vowed to put her own child first, no matter what. And she did.
But now, suddenly, she has a chance to vault into that elite tier of “chosen” musicians. There’s just one problem: somewhere along the way, she lost the power and the magic that used to be hers at the keyboard. She needs to get them back. Now.
Her quest―what her husband calls her obsession―turns out to have a cost Susannah couldn’t have anticipated. Even her hand betrays her, as Susannah learns that she has a progressive hereditary disease that’s making her fingers cramp and curl―a curse waiting in her genes, legacy of a birth family that gave her little else. As her now-or-never concert draws near, Susannah is catapulted back to memories she’s never been able to purge―and forward, to choices she never thought she would have to make.
Told through the unique perspective of a musician, The Sound Between the Notes draws the reader deeper and deeper into the question Susannah can no longer silence: Who am I, and where do I belong?

A story that speaks to our universal need to have someone who believes in us unequivocally, and how that person had better be ourselves.” —Ellen Notbohm, award-winning author of The River by Starlight
Wow, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted a review. Or really anything. Basically, if I were to sum it up, this semester has been… rough… But I’m back and I’m sharing this beautifully written book. In case you didn’t notice from the title this book has a theme of music spun throughout, and as you’re reading the book it really feels as if you’re reading a piece of music specifically woven in the form of a story.
This book was heavy and emotional. And you know, sometimes when I’m feeling beaten (*cough, this semester in summary*) I want to relax with nonsensical things and other times I want to read something deep that will further rip apart my feelings. And this book was one of them. And yes, I know I’m being melodramatic right now please allow it. But this book also hit home in a weird way as I was deeply involved in anything and everything related to music growing up, but when I got to my senior year and started listening to people tell me I had to do something “serious” with my life and so I literally just stopped it all. So I think that is part of the reason why this story resonated so much with me. I was able to connect to those feelings of regret and what-if.
This book has so much going for it and as a little cherry on top it revolves around just how empowering women can be. And I’m here for that. And I think many of you are as well. So don’t skip over this one and feel some feels.

From Jeff Wheeler, the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Kingfountain novels, comes an epic new series of warring kingdoms, deadly family rivalries, and fearless loyalty.
Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown. A brutal war of succession has plunged the court of Kingfountain into a power struggle between a charitable king who took the crown unlawfully and his ambitious rival, Devon Argentine. The balance of power between the two men hinges on the fate of a young boy ensnared in this courtly intrigue. A boy befittingly nicknamed Ransom.
When the Argentine family finally rules, Ransom must make his own way in the world. Opportunities open and shut before him as he journeys along the path to knighthood, blind to a shadowy conspiracy of jealousy and revenge. Securing his place will not be easy, nor will winning the affection of Lady Claire de Murrow, a fiery young heiress from an unpredictably mad kingdom.
Ransom interrupts an abduction plot targeting the Queen of Ceredigion and earns a position in service to her son, the firstborn of the new Argentine dynasty. But conflict and treachery threaten the family, and Ransom must also come to understand and hone his burgeoning powers—abilities that involve more than his mastery with a blade and that make him as much a target as his lord.

“With this superlative epic fantasy…Wheeler does an expert job of reintroducing his fantasy world through the eyes of sympathetic characters that fans and new readers alike will root for. This is sure to be a hit.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“[Wheeler] adds elements of Arthurian legend to the start of the First Argentines series…along with splendid palace intrigues and battles.” —Booklist (starred review)
This is my second book by Wheeler and I was so excited to dive back into his writing. Especially with an epic fantasy like this book. And ooo boy was it beyond amazing. And now I know that I need to go back and read all of the other books from this world. Which, I’m not mad about because I’ll take fantasy gladly any day.
But where do I begin. I think with the characters. I adored the characters in this book and how they grew and developed throughout it. And there is a lot of time spent developing the characters, which I really love when a fantasy book does that. I feel like sometimes fantasies get so focused on the plot that the characters fall to the wayside, or vice versa really, and this one felt like a nice sorta in-between with a little more focus on the characters but still a solid plot. And you know a solid plot is a must after reading a synopsis like this. Which I guess leads me to the pacing of this book. A lot happens in this one within a short span of time and I couldn’t get enough of it!
So this is one that you should definitely check out. Nudge nudge, wink wink. But seriously, there’s a lot to offer in this book and it really delivers exceptionally well throughout. And I truly look forward to seeing what Wheeler comes up with next as well as exploring some of his older works that are already waiting for me to binge.

Showing that truth is stranger than fiction, Sylvain Neuvel weaves a scfi thriller reminiscent of Blake Crouch and Andy Weir, blending a fast moving, darkly satirical look at 1940s rocketry with an exploration of the amorality of progress and the nature of violence in A History of What Comes Next.
Always run, never fight. Preserve the knowledge. Survive at all costs. Take them to the stars.
Over 99 identical generations, Mia’s family has shaped human history to push them to the stars, making brutal, wrenching choices and sacrificing countless lives. Her turn comes at the dawn of the age of rocketry. Her mission: to lure Wernher Von Braun away from the Nazi party and into the American rocket program, and secure the future of the space race.
But Mia’s family is not the only group pushing the levers of history: an even more ruthless enemy lurks behind the scenes.
A darkly satirical first contact thriller, as seen through the eyes of the women who make progress possible and the men who are determined to stop them..

Praise for A History of What Comes Next
“[This series] is filled with virtually limitless narrative possibilities.” ―Kirkus
“An extraordinary twist on the space race and a paean to what smart, strong women can accomplish. I’m always over the moon for Neuvel’s stories!” ―Delilah Dawson
Sylvain Neuvel proves once again he deserves the title of the hottest new SF writer of the 21st century ― and this time he does it by looking back at the storied development of rocketry in the 20th. Clever and compelling, with a succession of kick-ass heroines propelling events along via mayhem and murder behind the scenes, A History of What Comes Next blasts off on page one and will keep you enthralled until the end. ―Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of The Oppenheimer Alternative
“A highly crafted and unique look at the space race, through the eyes of those who exist only to ensure its success… Neuvel’s intriguing first-contact story is set through centuries of manipulation and pursuit. It’s a promising start to what looks to be a dark and exciting trilogy.” ―Library Journal
“The balance of wry narration, wired action, and delicate worldbuilding make for deeply gratifying reading. Fans of alternate history and intelligent sci-fi will love this.” ―Publishers Weekly starred review.
This book is oddly niche, but that’s what makes it work. You know? It’s just so out there but also so grounded that everything, no matter how convoluted it may seem, comes together into one soundly cohesive book. It’s got that historical background that’s bound to intrigue mixed in with sci-fi elements that just work together given the subject manner. And aliens. You know I like aliens.
Now, did I mention that this book has history? Yeah, well it does, and I am digging the historical fiction/science fiction combination. Call it my nerd side, but I really have a soft spot for historical fiction and learning something as I read. And you can really tell that this one was well researched even if there are elements to it that clearly fall into more of a space opera/sci-fi zone. I mean, A History of What Comes Next is largely about the alien race Kibsu.
I really found this to be an interesting foray into a sort of what if type of situation with our not so distant past. History could have been much different, and you never know, maybe there are some alien races changing our history as we are living it.

Sylvain Neuvel dropped out of high school at age 15. Along the way, he has been a journalist, worked in soil decontamination, sold ice cream in California, and furniture across Canada. He received a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Chicago. He taught linguistics in India, and worked as a software engineer in Montreal. He is also a certified translator, though he wishes he were an astronaut. He absolutely loves toys; his girlfriend would have him believe that he has too many, so he writes about aliens and giant robots as a blatant excuse to build action figures (for his son, of course). His debut, Sleeping Giants, was described by NPR as “one of the most promising series kickoffs in recent memory.”

Surfaces are deceiving . . .
After falling for Ezra and discovering a gateway to the Otherworld, it’s a truism Ruby knows to take to heart. But La Luna finally feels like home, and with graduation just weeks away and a cushy internship on a nearby archeological dig in her pocket, it’s easy to downplay the strange new events taking place in the Glorieta Pass. Even when Angel’s deadbeat father reappears after twenty years, stirring up questions about Angel, the ruin, and Ruby’s mother.
Uncertainty is bad enough, but when Ruby starts having inexplicable visions, and the archeological dig unearths mysterious artifacts connected to both a fabled Aztec city and the Pecos Pueblo, Ruby faces more than an uncertain future — she’s forced to accept the role of True of Heart. Will Ezra and her friends stand by her as she confronts the Otherworld? Love is enigmatic, especially in the heart of New Mexico, but the Otherworld may be the biggest mystery of them all.

“A powerful book which both stands nicely alone and compliments Between Wild and Ruin . . . absolutely enthralling reading.” —Midwest Book Review
“What could be a corny premise turns into an exhilarating, fun ride in Edelson’s adept hands. Her characters are smartly drawn, and readers will easily identify with Ruby, a strong yet insecure young artist on the verge of adulthood, who is still recovering from her tragic past . . . Fans of Twilight and modern fairy tales will fall in love with Ruby and root for her eventual romance.” —Blue Ink Review (Starred Review)
“Between Wild and Ruin is a stunning story of legends, romance, and destiny with themes of starting over, small towns, beauty, and community . . . Edelson perfectly breathes new life in mythology by honoring the oral tradition of a small community and the ruins that bring to life Ruby’s destiny.” —Manhattan Book Review
“Highly recommended to mature teens through new adult and adult audiences, this is a story that lingers in the mind long after its final revelation.” —Midwest Book Review
“A great addition to young adult urban fantasy.” —Seattle Book Review
“Descriptions of the New Mexico landscape are rich and atmospheric, arousing the senses with references to the scent of smoke and juniper, the predatory roar of mountain lions, and the brilliant dazzle of stars in the desert sky . . . The writing conveys a sense of timelessness, making it easy to believe Ruby’s sense that the land is spirit-haunted and that Leo, the handsome young man she encounters near the ruins, is somehow connected to it all.” —Clarion Forward
“An intriguing historical tale and an over-the-top love-quadrangle romance.” —Kirkus Reviews
“The paranormal aspects of the tale are credible and richly steeped in traditional lore, and the plot is finely crafted . . . Between Wild and Ruin is most highly recommended.” —Reader’s Favorite (5-Star Review)

I was so excited to get my hands on this one when I saw it, and man was it a good one! It’s one of those books that immediately hook you and require you to finish it as soon as possible. It’s just such an easy read while also being expertly crafted. And that’s before even mentioning the amazing writing in this book! Everything about it made Wild Open Faces such a joy to read.
So, let me just say that when you start this book you need to buckle up. Because there is SO MUCH that goes on and you just need to be ready for one thing after the other. But even with all of that action, the plot isn’t just tossed aside. There is still development and a really solid story throughout the book. And the characters were perfectly imperfect. Some terrible decisions and questionable judgement was found throughout, but to me that makes them all the more realistic.
Overall I really enjoyed this one even more than I had expected. There was just so much that was delivered and it was done in such an excellent way. And make sure that if you haven’t already to read book one! And with one and two out already you can just binge them one after the other!

“Editor Ryan’s selections perfectly fit the dark, gray, wintry mood that hits when cold weather has dragged on for too long. This anthology features eight short stories, each gripping, mind-bending, and truly creepy. Dead of Winter has something for every horror reader.” —Carrie Rasak, Booklist
I feel like I was robbed of my winter this year with how hot it has been, so I’m taking it back with some spooky stories. I mean, if I’m not feeling chilled from the weather I might as well feel some chills from what I’m reading. And it has been far too long since I read an anthology of stories, so honestly this book was just long overdue.
This collection of stories was just so good. I wanted to say it was better than expected, but I nearly always fall in love with anthologies, so I went into this with high expectations that were most definitely met and then some. So it was a complete success in blowing me away! Plus I’ve just been in the mood for horror and spooky and all around creepy, so this was the perfect read to fill some of those cravings. And I loved how all of the stories had a similar premise but they all delivered something new and different.
Dead of Winter is an amazing collection of stories that all come together to make something unique and special. And because it is an anthology it is an extremely quick read for all of my binge readers out there as well as one you could take your time with and never lose track of what you’ve read. So, I mean this one is an all around win!
