Review

Ok, so this book reminded me of a bunch of my old favorite YA books thrown together into something new and modernized. If that makes sense. But it had that….. I don’t really know what word I’m looking for so I’m going to go with OOMPH…. that I kind of miss in newer YA books. But this is one of those books you can just sit down and enjoy without having to “think” too hard.

I really enjoyed the characters and story of this book. It’s just something that’s enjoyable for the sake of being enjoyable. And I don’t know about you, but I need a whole heck of a lot of that right now. I really liked what we were given in the story and the characters but I also want to know more. So, uhm, second book? Side story? I don’t know but there is room for more I think.

Now, there are some things that could be improved on in this book (some further editing and all of that), but honestly it didn’t even bother me or detract from the story. This is a just a book that I was able to pick up, read, and say it was a good story and sometimes that’s better than something that is going to over turn your world.

Review

I have been looking forward to this book since I read the first one last year! These books are just so cute and wholesome while at the same time contain a splendid story. Plus they make me giggle as I read, and I love looking like a crazy person while I read because I’m too invested in the humor.

This book took what we learned in book one and amplified it. We got to explore more of the world of the gods and goddesses as well as a story of love losing its passion. And I have to say that Into the Quiet didn’t fall into the sophomore slump of series. I enjoyed this one just as much, if not a little more, as the first one.

I really am fond of this series and am so happy that I had the chance to check it out as it’s not in my regular genre. It’s a series that took me by surprise with just how much I loved it, but also one that I now look forward to and keep in my mind as some of my favorite reads.

The Summer of Lost and Four Tour – Review

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

The “authentic, generous, and heartfelt” (Mary Kay Andrews, New York Times bestselling author) Beach House series returns with this tender and compassionate novel following the historic Rutledge family of Charleston South Carolina. Together, they face a summer of upheaval and change with perseverance, a spirit of unity, and a dose of humor. So that by summer’s end, they discover unexpected joys and lessons that will endure long past one season.

The coming of Spring usually means renewal, but for Linnea Rutledge, Spring 2020 threatens stagnation. Linnea faces another layoff, this time from the aquarium she adores. For her—and her family—finances, emotions, and health teeter at the brink. To complicate matters, her new love interest, Gordon, struggles to return to the Isle of Palms from England. Meanwhile, her old flame, John, turns up from California and is quarantining next door. She tries to ignore him, but when he sends her plaintive notes in the form of paper airplanes, old sparks ignite. When Gordon at last reaches the island, Linnea wonders—is it possible to love two men at the same time?

Love in the time of coronavirus proves challenging, at times humorous, and ever changing. Relationships are redefined, friendships made and broken, and marriages tested. As the weeks turn to months, and another sea turtle season comes to a close, Linnea and the Rutledge family continue to face their challenges with the strength, faith, and commitment that has inspired readers for decades.

In The Summer of Lost and Found, Mary Alice Monroe once again delves into the complexities of family relationships and brings her signature “sensitive and true” (Dorothea Benton Frank, New York Times bestselling author) storytelling to this poignant and timely novel of love, courage, and resilience.

Review

Phew, today is the perfect day to post about this book because it is HOT outside! Like almost 90 degrees hot! But anyways, this was such a gorgeous and beautifully written book that I couldn’t tear myself away from! And you know what, I think I was finally ready for a book that reflects what we’re currently and have been going through and I really found myself enjoying the current-ness of this story.

I really loved the characters in this book and they are truly what makes this story. Without being able to appreciate them the story would fall flat. But they written with such depth that you can’t help but want to know what might happen next with them.

The fact that this book covers how COVID-19 impacted all of us is difficult, but it’s also a good kind of difficult and therapeutic in a sense. It gives you a chance to reflect on just how much everything has changed as well as just remembering EVERYTHING that has happened. And in a sense it helped relieved some of my stress over it. Plus the story is just so wonderful that it helps to pull you in.

About the Author

Mary Alice Monroe is the New York Times bestselling author of 23 novels, including On Ocean Boulevard, which is the sixth installment of the Beach House series.

More than 7.5 million copies of her books have been published worldwide, and she’s earned numerous accolades and awards, including: Induction into the South Carolina Academy of Authors’ Hall of Fame; the Southwest Florida Author of Distinction Award; South Carolina Award for Literary Excellence; RT Lifetime Achievement Award; the International Book Award for Green Fiction, and the prestigious Southern Book Prize for Fiction. Her bestselling novel The Beach House is a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie.

Monroe is the co-creator and co-host of the weekly web show and podcast Friends and Fiction featuring the five bestselling authors Mary Kay Andrews, Kristy Woodson Harvey, Kristin Harmel, and Patti Callahan Henry with endless stories, special guests, and a way to connect readers and writers.

Monroe is captivated by the beauty and fragility of the wild habitat around her. In particular, the coastal southern landscape became a strong and important focus of many of her novels.  Monroe immerses herself in both academic research and hands-on/volunteering to learn about a species or conservation issue. Then, she uses the knowledge and experiences working with animals and the wildlife experts to craft captivating stories that identify important parallels between nature and human nature. Bottlenose dolphins, monarch butterflies, shorebirds, and loggerhead sea turtles are among the wild species she has worked with and woven into her novels.

Monroe is an active conservationist and serves on the South Carolina Aquarium Board Emeritis, The Leatherback Trust, The Pat Conroy Literary Center Honorary Board, Friends of Coastal Carolina and Casting Carolinas Advisory Board. She is especially proud to be a twenty year plus state-certified volunteer with the Island Turtle Team, the group that first sparked her love for loggerhead sea turtles, and is the inspiration of her Beach House series.

Monroe has also published two children’s books, which complement the environmental themes she’s known for in her novels. Monroe’s first Middle Grade book, The Islanders, will be released in June 2021.

Her next novel is The Summer of Lost and Found, set for release May 11, 2021.

She is a frequent speaker at book festivals, conferences, and private events. Monroe is also a frequent contributor to magazines and blogs.

Illicit Intent Tour – Review

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

Calliope Garland’s newsdesk assignment was fairly straightforward—dig up the dirt on the sketchy CEO of a Wall Street hedge fund. But when the man is murdered and valuable data destroyed, a simple investigation turns deadly. Calliope is unwittingly in possession of vital financial information and a priceless work of art; either of which may get her killed. With an ever-growing list of people who want to harm her, Calliope must set aside her reservations and turn to the one man she knows she can trust.

Miller “Tox” Buchanan is a study in contradictions: kind but lethal, passionate but distant, self-possessed yet hesitant. He knows he should keep his distance, but when Calliope is hurled into danger, Tox will stop at nothing to protect her.

…Her first instinct wasn’t to dial 911 but rather to call a certain Navy SEAL. She forced down the antiquated damsel in distress fantasy floating around in her head and rationalized the police would surely ask questions she was unwilling or unable to answer. She brought up her contacts. At the bottom, she touched the entry labeled, Tox, and the call rang through. A grizzly bear answered.

“This better be good.”

“Tox?”

“Calliope?”

“I need your help…”

Be advised: this story contains scenes of violence equivalent to an R-rated movie and explicit sexual situations.

Praise for Illicit Intent

A steamy and seductive romance combined with an intricate plot involving art thieves, assassins, and undercover intelligence operatives make Illicit Intent a ravishingly entertaining read that hooks you in from the first page and simply refuses to let go.-Readers’ Favorite (5/5 Stars)

Review

This book just has so many amazing aspects that are rolled all together into one amazing book. So, to say the least, this is an entertaining story that will leave you hooked and waiting for more. And while this book is a part of a series, you can read them out of order or pick and choose which ones you want to read! So don’t worry if you’re new to the series, but you also might as well just grab the first because you’ll want to read it anyways.

This story has twists and turns and an amazing story throughout. But, T=the plot to this story isn’t the only amazing things. The characters are also really well developed. I found myself loving each and every character as I met them and wanted to learn more and more about them. And while there is so much packed into this story it’s written so well that you don’t even realize how much was put into this story until you finish.

So, as you can see I really loved this one. It’s just such a well written book that I couldn’t help but fall in love with it.

Sunflower Sisters Tour – Review

Click the image to see my booksta post!

Review

Lilac Girls introduced readers to Caroline Ferriday, an American philanthropist who helped young girls released from Ravensbruck concentration camp. Now, in Sunflower Sisters, Kelly tells the story of her ancestor Georgeanna Woolsey, a Union nurse who joins the war effort during the Civil War, and how her calling leads her to cross paths with Jemma, a young enslaved girl who is sold off and conscripted into the army, and Ann-May Wilson, a southern plantation mistress whose husband enlists.

Georgeanne “Georgey” Woolsey isn’t meant for the world of lavish parties and demure attitudes of women of her stature. So when the war ignites the nation, Georgey follows her passion for nursing during a time when doctors considered women a bother on the battlefront. In proving them wrong, she and her sister Eliza venture from New York to Washington, D.C., to Gettysburg and witness the unparalleled horrors of slavery as they become involved in the war effort.

In the South, Jemma is enslaved on the Peeler Plantation in Maryland, where she lives with her mother and father. Her sister, Patience, is enslaved on the plantation next door and both live in fear of LeBaron, an abusive overseer who tracks their every move. When Jemma is sold by the cruel plantation mistress Anne-May at the same time the Union army comes through, she sees a chance to finally escape–but only by abandoning the family she loves.

Anne-May is left behind to run Peeler Planation when her husband joins the Union Army and her cherished brother enlists with the Confederates. In charge of the household, she uses the opportunity to follow her own ambitions and is drawn into a secret Southern network of spies, finally exposing herself to the fate she deserves.

Inspired by true accounts, Sunflower Sisters provides a vivid, detailed look at the Civil War experience, from the barbaric and inhumane plantations, to a war-torn New York City to the horrors of the battlefield. It’s a sweeping story of women caught in a country on the brink of collapse, in a society grappling with nationalism and unthinkable racial cruelty, a story still so relevant today.

Praise for Sunflower Sisters

From Southern spies to nurses on the northern battlefields, Sunflower Sisters weaves an exquisite tapestry of women determined to defy the molds the world has for them. The journeys of Jemma and the Woolsey sisters will have readers celebrating those who came before us, who fought for what they knew was right, and became timeless women ahead of their times.”—Lisa Wingate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours and The Book of Lost Friends

“Sunflower Sisters marks the third installment of Martha Hall Kelly’s tales of the formidable Woolsey Women, with this chapter unfolding across the plantations, battlefields, and parlor rooms of one of history’s most dramatic moments. The Civil War roils as a sweeping backdrop and an era of both heartbreaking and inspiring humanity. Kelly’s vivid prose, stunning historical research, and heartfelt, compelling characters make this a gripping, page-turning read.”—Allison Pataki, New York Times bestselling author of The Queen’s Fortune

Review

To say I was excited for this book was a little bit of an understatement. I mean, I literally started reading it as soon as it came in the mail. There’s just something about this story that pulls you right in and forces you to become invested in the characters and their lives.

This book is just so beautifully written and I really love how all of the stories come together. And it’s such a timely story that is done artfully. There wasn’t a single main character that I wasn’t invested in and I really just enjoyed the setting. I don’t want to get into too much of the plot though because I want you to be able to just fall into it and let the story unfold around you.

Also, although this is technically the third book in this series feel free to read them out of order! While the books follow the same family they are set in separate time frames so you can run out to the bookstore and get Sunflower Sisters right now!

It features Caroline’s mother Eliza Ferriday and her fight to save a group of Russian women, former aristocrats who lost everything in the Russian Revolution. In Light of the Summit

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

The much-anticipated sequel to IN SIGHT OF THE MOUNTAIN!

After Anna Gallagher’s first climb on Mt. Rainier, she faces a new challenge—enduring the ridicule and threats that come with breaking tradition. In 1890, being a young female mountaineer makes polite society uncomfortable, even angry. But despite the threats and inherent risk, she still has plans for another climb, even if it jeopardizes her family bookstore, and puts her in more danger than she ever imagined.

Emily Watson has always been close with the Gallagher family. As a young girl she dreamed of a wealthy husband, a fine house, and a future in Seattle society and now she finally has it. Her desires couldn’t be more different than Anna’s, but she’s confronted with her own invisible mountain to climb when she’s suddenly poverty-stricken. She must decide what matters most, and whether true love is worth waiting for.

IN LIGHT OF THE SUMMIT is a captivating story of ambition, heartbreak, and redemption. It’s a tale of two childhood friends navigating womanhood in the late 19th century, with as much grace as they can muster, while still figuring out how to be true to themselves.

Praise for In Light of the Summit

Turn of the century social conventions come in conflict with a determined young woman’s desire to climb Mt. Ranier in Washington State. Anna must make a choice, to be true to herself or “know one’s place” and conform to avoid conflict within her family and society at large. Author, Jamie McGillen, explores this and other social injustices historically imposed on women, many that still resonate a century and a half later – mountains yet to climb.” — San Francisco Book Review

“In Light of the Summit by Jamie McGillen is a charming sequel to her first novel, In Sight of the Mountain. McGillen’s love for her home state and Mt. Rainier shines through her writing. Her description is vivid and beautiful. Readers will be inspired to climb the mountain themselves. She brings Mt. Rainier and the Pacific Northwest climate to life. Anna is a strong and determined female character, and her husband Ben is always supportive. Their love is believable and sweet. This book is filled with adventure and romance and danger. The mystery is well-plotted, with several great twists. If you are looking for a good, clean novel to curl up in front of a cozy fire with, you can’t go wrong with this one.” — Heather Stockard, Readers’ Favorite (5 Star Review)

Review

You know, I really enjoy books like this. They’re soothing to read yet feature such powerhouse and inspiring women. It’s just a really nice combination that draws you wholly into the story. Plus the backdrop to this series is amazing and beautiful.

There were so many elements to this book that wove together so perfectly into one story, but I don’t want to get too much into the plot because the events are a direct follow up to the first book in the series. But the characters and setting have such amazing backgrounds and backdrops that you’ll find yourself flipping as fast as you can through this book.

The last nice, but also sad, thing about this book is that it isn’t terribly long. So if you’re like me you’ll be able to stay up late and devour this one in one go. But don’t worry, the book isn’t so short that it makes you feel as if the story got lost along the way.

Everything about large evergreen trees delights her, except how poky they are, and the sap. First Quiver Tour – Review

About the Book

Immortality isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially for the 3,375-year-old virgin of Mount Olympus. Cupid’s coddled, humdrum existence takes a sharp turn for the worse when his mischievous aim sends a love-tipped arrow into the wrong rump, and the God of Love gets a taste of his own medicine.

Banished from Mount Olympus, Cupid plunges to Earth and lands in present-day Tarra, Indiana, where mortals go on about their daily routines, oblivious to the capricious gods stirring the pot from above. Delighted to discover his wings and pubescent pudge have transformed into an impressive human form, Cupid swiftly leaves his virginity behind. His carnal spree is cut short when he falls passionately in love for the first time in his immortal life, and the full measure of his punishment becomes clear: he must find the Right Love match for the mortal he desperately loves, and then he must let her go.

To fulfill his divine mission, Cupid must survive the violent throes of his own coming of age while battling the powerful gods conspiring against him. FIRST QUIVER explores the meaning of love with an irreverent, contemporary take on classical mythology and the original dysfunctional family.

Review

Can I just say that this book was just too cute? I mean not only was the premise uniquely comical but the story was also surprisingly heartfelt. And I am such a sucker for anything Greek god related so it was already a win in my book. But this book just gave you exactly what you’d expect and then some with just a sharp wit and just every emotion on the spectrum.

I mean, once you start reading this one you’ll think to yourself: what’s not to love? First Quiver is a book that doesn’t take itself too seriously (you know one of those types of books) but also doesn’t fall into the trap of becoming a pointless book. Plus I got to realize that Cupid is under-appreciated! I mean after reading this fun story I’m ready for even more Cupid inspired books!

This is just one of those books that are a joy to read. The type that you could pick up whenever, settle down, and find yourself smiling as you read it. And I don’t know about you, but that’s something that I find much needed lately. And I love a cheesy but well done story, they’re just so satisfying!

Cover Your Tracks Tour – Review

About the Book

Margo Fletcher, eight months pregnant, is traveling by train from Chicago to Spokane, her childhood home. While passing through an isolated portion of the Rockies in blizzard conditions, the train unexpectedly brakes. Up ahead, deadly snow from a massive avalanche plummets down the mountain. Despite the conductor’s order for the passengers to stay seated, former Army Ranger Nick Eliot insists that survival depends on moving to the back of the train. Only Margo believes him. They take refuge in the last train car, which Nick heroically uncouples in time to avoid the avalanche. The rest of the train is hurled down the mountainside and is soon lost forever in a blanket of snow. Margo and Nick, the sole survivors, are stranded in the snowstorm without food, water, or heat. Rescuers might not arrive for days.

When the weather turns violent again, the pair must flee the shelter of the passenger car and run for their lives into the wilderness. They must fend off the deadly cold as well as predatory wild animals foraging for food. We learn that both Margo and Nick have secrets that have brought them together and threaten to destroy them.

Cover Your Tracks is a chilling story of love and hate, the devastating power of nature, and the will to survive.

Review

You know those books where you just have to take one look at them and you instantly know they’re your kind of book? Well, Cover Your Tracks was one of those books. I have a penchant for survival stories and as soon as I saw this one I just had to read it. And it did not disappoint. To say the least: this book had me HOOKED.

Now, when I say this book had me hooked I mean I could literally not put it down. I just had to keep turning the pages and seeing what fresh horror awaited our characters. And, as you can surmise from the synopsis, the stakes are high. But they’re also so much higher than you could even begin to imagine. And I don’t want to say anything more on that lest I accidentally give anything away.

Now, there are a few things I want to touch on before I close out this review and that is mainly some race issues towards Indigenous Americans I noticed throughout the book. However, I am not an Indigenous American so I just want to mention it but not make any assumptions based off of what I read. BUT, these have been removed per the authors/publishers request for the finished version and knowing that I can gladly say that this is an amazing book.

About the Book

From the USA Today bestselling author comes a gripping thriller about a divorce attorney who’s about to discover her own marriage is based on lies when she’s arrested for murder.

Attorney Olivia Sinclair is shocked when she receives an anonymous video showing her husband Richard sleeping with someone else. After years of handling other people’s divorces, she thought she could recognise a marriage in trouble.

She angrily throws Richard out of the home they share. But days later she’s arrested—for the murder of his mistress.

Olivia knows she’s innocent but, with all the evidence pointing at her and an obvious motive, she must find the real killer to clear her name.

She may be used to dealing with messy divorces, but this one will be her most difficult case yet. Olivia’s husband has already betrayed her—but would he set her up for murder?

A gripping and unputdownable thriller for fans of Gillian McAllister, Alafair Burke and A Killer’s Wife.

Review

What a perfect book to ring in the new year with! I had taken a slight book break (AKA I haven’t had a chance to binge lately) in case you cant tell and I finally got a chance to sit down and just read with this one and I am so happy that this was the first book I am logging in a review for this year. Because it was intense and crazy and wild and amazing!

There was just so much to like about this book, but what perhaps was the best part was that it is just a solid and well thought out plot. While I almost always guess the “whodunit” at the beginning of the book (can I blame my addiction to Sherlock Holmes as a child for this?), I still really enjoy books like this. And The Betrayal is definitely one of my new favorites in this genre!

This is a perfect psychological thriller for many types of readers and people. It has a little something for everyone and quite honestly it’ll just hook you from the moment you pick it up. So, go give this one a try (*nudge, nudge*)!

Possession Tour – Review

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

Recently widowed Sylvie Andrus moves with her young son, Jason, to a small river town, and discovers she must solve a two-century old mystery to rid herself of the ghost who haunts her. Still grieving, she finds the ghost of her husband, Ned, waiting in her new home to seduce her. Jason warns Sylvie the ghost is evil but, swept up by her yearning for her husband and determined to reveal what happened to Clarinda Braxton, a Revolutionary Era painter who disappeared without a trace in 1794, she delays, putting her son’s life in peril.

Praise for Possession

“Ginny Fite weaves a fascinating tale of an undiscovered murder, a grieving widow, a mysterious ghost and the history that connects them.  A love story and a ghost story, POSSESSION celebrates the courage of women to overcome tragedy and grief.”—K.P. Robbins, The Stonehenge Scrolls

“As we’ve come to expect of keen-eyed author Ginny Fite, Possession is masterful. In a cyclone of peril and malevolence this novel spirals us back to chilling events of the 18th century, then lets the consequences fall on a 21st century mother and son.  For a story with compelling characters that is both haunting and heartwarming, Possession delivers the goods. –Lee W. Doty, Tidal Kin

“Ginny Fite strikes again, taking us on a wild ride in Possession—an unusual blend of mystery, feminism, and horror told in dual storylines. I consumed this book in a few sittings, desperate for resolution.” –Leslie M. Rollins, Good-Time Girl

Review

Have I mentioned lately how much I love ghost stories? Because I really do. There’s something about them that just lures me in. And Possession is one of those stories that swiftly lures you in, switching between two different perspectives and times to deliver the whole of the story.

What really makes this story so haunting and enjoyable are the characters. We get to learn so much about them and become invested in what is happening to their lives. Or what happened. And this book is short enough that the sharp focus on the characters is really what drives the story. And for me that’s what I like to see in a ghost story. I just feel like it makes the haunting aspect of the story that much more impactful.

I really enjoyed this new ghost story and getting a glimpse into these characters lives. It’s also a really fast read so you can easily devour it in one sitting. And I also want to just point out how well everything flowed in this book! Which can be difficult with a book set up like this.
