About the Book

The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller
Publisher: Feiwel and Friends
Release Date: February 25th 2020Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Seducing the king will prove to be a most enjoyable task, indeed.

Tricia Levenseller

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

Once, there was another boy who made me feel this way. One who made me feel full and seen and loved. Now the bugs of the earth have feasted on his flesh.

Tricia Levenseller

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

Review

*See’s opening is a Damon Salvatore quote* “Whelp, I guess I’ll like this one.” So, I started this book, I read for hours straight, then I finished this book. I literally could not put it down. It had me laughing aloud. It had me beyond intrigued. It was killing me with the slow burn romance. I was shouting with joy for the female empowerment. And I was relishing in the friendships.

Hopeful? More like presumptuous. Arrogant.

Tricia Levenseller

Like, I loved this book so much that I stayed up FAR too late on a week I’m already sleep deprived on. It legit KEPT me awake because I needed to finish it and make sure everything turned out ok. Because, *sob,* this is a standalone. Which is probably the biggest downfall to this story! I mean, I wouldn’t be mad if there were more books coming out. Even if I had to wait for them! I just… I loved it.

Did I break the king? He manages to straighten after a moment and look over at me, but then his face contorts and he’s back to uncontrollable laughter.

Tricia Levenseller

I also loved our two main characters! They are blissfully morally grey and yet they made me laugh with the situations their deviousness got them in. Alessandra is a total babe who OWNS her sexuality. But she also is an amazing friend and will go to any length for those she keeps close. The Shadow King (which every time I say this makes me think about the Goblin King for some reason?) is a total cinnamon roll wrapped up in shadowy powerful yumminess. And also probably caused the most laugh out loud moments for me with his on point flirting.

Not beautiful enough to tempt him, am I? We’ll see about that.

Tricia Levenseller

Which leads me to doing favorite quotes for this tour stop. HOW was I supposed to narrow down my quote choices?! I had probably about 20-30 more quotes I had highlighted that I wanted to add in. BUT, for the sake of this post not being ridiculously long I went with an OK selection of what I loved from this book.

Who in the world would steal and then not keep the riches for themselves? That’s just bad business.

Tricia Levenseller

Now, the only qualms I have for this book (which is literally me just nitpicking to include something) is the descriptions. Sometimes I found the over descriptive passages on the outfits was a little bit awkward and unneeded. I mean, it fits in with Alessandra’s love of fashion design, but there were times I could have done with more descriptions of the actual scenery/world compared to detailed descriptions on how many buttons were on the coat of a passerby. NOW, like I said, this is literally me just nitpicking for the sake of having SOMETHING and ANYTHING I could point out that detracted from my overall enamored reading of this book.

About the Author

Tricia Levenseller is the author of the Daughter of the Pirate King duology, Warrior of the Wild, and forthcoming The Shadows Between Us. She likes to describe her books as young adult alternate–world historical fantasies with heavy romantic subplots.

She received her degree in English Language and editing, and she is thrilled that she never has to read a textbook again. When she’s not writing or reading, Tricia enjoys putting together jigsaw puzzles, playing volleyball, playing Overwatch with her siblings, and watching shows while eating extra-buttered popcorn.

Dream Cast

Whenever I think Queen, I think of Sophie T.
I mean, shadows and Daddario go hand in hand!
I needed some boy net door with some sex appeal.
I just find Lily Collins so elegant and the perfect choice for a reasonable friend.
If there’s Sophie T. there must be Maisie, plus she’d be perfect as a waifish bestie!

The Seventh Sun Tour – Review, Favorite Quotes, & Giveaway

About the Book

The Seventh Sun (The Age of the Seventh Sun #1) by Lani Forbes
Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
Release Date: 18th February 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

The sun of the Chicome people has been destroyed six times. First by water, then by storm, fire, famine, sickness, and beasts. After each apocalypse, the creator goddess allowed one of her divine children to sacrifice themselves to save civilization. The gods paid their blood as the price for the lives of the people, and the people owed them blood in return.

Molding the water into a transparent sphere, Mayana let it hover between her hands just for a moment, enjoying the light sparkling and reflecting off its shining surface.

Lani Forbes

Mayana is a noble descendant of the water goddess and can control water whenever her blood is spilled. She has always despised the brutal rituals of her people — especially sacrifices. She can’t even make it through a routine animal sacrifice without embarrassing her family. Prince Ahkin has always known he would be emperor, but he didn’t expect his father to die so suddenly. Now he must raise the sun in the sky each day and read the signs in the stars. But the stars now hint at impending chaos and the sun has begun setting earlier each evening. Ahkin fears he might not be strong enough to save his people from another apocalypse. And to add to his list of worries, he can’t truly become emperor until he selects a wife.

How could she have lefts him at such a critical time? He needed her comfort now more than ever. He needed someone to believe in him.

Lani Forbes

Mayana and six other noble daughters are sent to the palace to compete for Ahkin’s hand. She must prove she is a true daughter of water and face the others who have their own magical gifts from wielding the elements to the control of animals, plants and healing. And in a society centered on rigid rituals, Mayana must conceal her traitorous beliefs because if she doesn’t make Ahkin love her, she will become a ceremonial sacrifice to bless his marriage. But darker forces are at play and it won’t matter if Mayana loses if the world ends first…

His face suggested he had seen a night spirit. His fear seeped into her like something contagious and her heart began to race. Why was he staring at her like that?

Lani Forbes

Rich in imagination and romance, and based on the legends and history of the Aztec and Mayan people, The Seventh Sun brings to vivid life a world on the edge of apocalyptic disaster.

Review

Well, Lani Forbes is officially the queen of descriptions and making me hungry through those. Like holy wow! I was selected to post my favorite quotes for this book and I wound up going with the age old tactic of just selecting the ones at the beginning because they were all amazing. I mean, the imagery! I was transported to this lush fantastical story.

Atanzah, like all professional matchmakers, was an elderly woman, round and soft like a ripe mango.

Lani Forbes

The Seventh Sun is based off of Aztec, Mayan, and Incan civilizations, and while I was on one hand desperate to rewatch The Emperors New Groove while reading this, I was also relishing in the authors choice to also uphold some of the dark aspects of the cultures. I’m talking sacrifices and blood magic. YES PLEASE! Which leads me to Mayan, the hard core but soft core (that’s a phrase, right?) daughter of the Chicome family who will FIGHT her father and traditions to avoid completing any animal sacrifices. Plus she has amazing water magic that comes from blood letting, so that’s pretty amazing! Then there is Ahkin, the squishable logical prince and descendant of the sun god.

Would you see me die to uphold some ancient ritual?

Lani Forbes

So plot-wise imagine The Selection mixed with Aztec/Mayan/Incan mythology. It’s got that amazing (and sometimes fluffy) politically based arranged marriages as well as the darkly powerful magic system. Add in the chance of a new apocalypse and some The Hunger Games traits and you have The Seventh Sun. Seriously, this book captured me from the first word and just continued to get better and better!

About the Author

Lani Forbes is the daughter of a librarian and an ex-drug smuggling surfer, which explains her passionate love of the ocean and books. A California native whose parents live in Mexico, she now resides in the Pacific Northwest where she stubbornly wears flip flops no matter how cold it gets. She teaches middle school math and science and proudly calls herself a nerd and Gryffindor. She is also an award-winning member of Romance Writers of America and the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Malice – Review, Dream Cast, & Giveaway

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

Malice by Pintip Dunn
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Release Date: February 4th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction

What I know: a boy in my class will one day wipe out two-thirds of the population with a virus.

What I don’t know: who he is.

In a race against the clock, I not only have to figure out his identity, but I’ll have to outwit a voice from the future telling me to kill him. Because I’m starting to realize no one is telling the truth. But how can I play chess with someone who already knows the outcome of my every move? Someone so filled with malice they’ve lost all hope in humanity? Well, I’ll just have to find a way—because now they’ve drawn a target on the only boy I’ve ever loved….

Review

Malice is a high octane sci-fi thriller with a bit of fantasy mixed in. It is such a fun and quick read! A certain character also made me giggle quite a lot, much to my chagrin a few times in class. What can I say? I love some good sarcastic banter. It also goes to show that I was so invested in reading this that I willingly read through class. Not that I would EVER in ANY other circumstance willingly not pay attention.

So I only have Malice as an ebook and I’m kind of sad. AKA, I think Imma buy a physical copy. I mean, it is really pretty! And even though I don’t have any shelf space left I DO reread books with characters who make me giggle a lot…. Probably more than I should. Which leads me to how I wasn’t sure if I would love this book. Throughout the years I have been wary of sci-fi. I don’t know why, but it’s just not something I always naturally love. BUT, this year I decided was going to be the year that I really get into this genre. And I’m so glad I chose Malice for this! It was the perfect selection and with the wit, the banter, and the thriller-esque experience I was absolutely hooked!

I loved the diversity amongst the characters. It was diversity without including diversity for diversity’s sake. PHEW, that was a lot of diversities! But it’s something that continuously frustrates me while reading, when you can tell that an author includes diversity just to say they did. So I really appreciated the flawless addition of diversity in Malice. Each character was their own unique person!

Dream Cast

So, I think I have found my niche in dream casts! I also just might like making mood boards. Who knows, I sure don’t! So, I hope you like my dream cast selections! I definitely went with a color based *aesthetic* this time, I guess I was just feeling the pastels.

All the Stars and Teeth Tour – Review, Dream Cast, & Giveaway

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

All the Stars and Teeth (All the Stars and Teeth #1)
by Adalyn Grace
Publisher: Imprint
Release Date: February 4th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Pirates

Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice, Adalyn Grace’s All the Stars and Teeth is a thrilling fantasy for fans of Stephanie Garber’s Caraval and Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series.

She will reign.

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer—the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic.

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic.

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder—and more peril—than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever.

I am the right choice. The only choice. And I will protect my kingdom.

Review

All the Stars and Teeth starts out with action and it just continues to grow! The beginning gives a lot of information, and I may have also chuckled a few pages in thinking about Moana (if you’ve read it I think you’ll get what part I’m talking about, I could just add a quote in but I want it to be a surprise). But overall, this is a story about going to the ends of the earth to save one’s kingdom.

I really enjoyed the writing style in this book. I had a pretty flow, but it also quickly got to the point. This can create an intricately magical world, and it definitely shone through in this story. The magic system was really interesting and I liked the connection to gemstones. I guess it spoke to my shiny obsessed brain. Which also brings me to the fact that this is a book about royalty. Even if it might have some seafaring pirate-y adventure (something I have been trying to add more of into my reading schedule).

Speaking of pirates, there is also romance and witty banter. I think thats enough said, cause I mean, witty banter. But anyways, there are also great relationships and friendships throughout this story. This is something I really enjoy seeing in books. Sometimes *gasp* maybe even more than a romantic story? I dunno, still on the fence about that statement. It probably changes based off of how curmudgeon-y I’m feeling.

About the Author

Adalyn Grace graduated Summa Cum Laude when she was 19-years-old. She spent four years working in live theater, and acted as the managing editor of a nonprofit newspaper. During and after college, she studied storytelling as an intern on Nickelodeon Animation’s popular animated show, The Legend of Korra (sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender). She was a participant in Pitch Wars 2016, and is a former literary agent intern for an established agency.

Adalyn splits time between San Diego and Arizona with her bossy cat and two dorky dogs, and spends her days writing full time while trying to find the city’s best burrito.

She has several projects in the works, and hopes to continually push the boundaries and explore the limits of upper young adult fiction.

You can follow her on Twitter, at @AdalynGrace_

Dream Cast

So, I did a little something with my dream cast this time and created mood boards for each of the characters. I picked an actress/actor, but also added in some aesthetic, I dunno, guess you could say I was in a mood (please excuse my lame excuse of a pun). See if you can guess who each of the boards represent (and yes, some are combined characters):

About the Book

What I Want You to See
by Catherine Linka
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Release Date: February 4th 2020

Genre: Young Adult

You really can’t tell much about a painting from a photo.

Catherine Linka

Winning a scholarship to California’s most prestigious art school seems like a fairy tale ending to Sabine Reye’s awful senior year. After losing both her mother and her home, Sabine longs for a place where she belongs.

But the cutthroat world of visual arts is nothing like what Sabine had imagined. Colin Krell, the renowned faculty member whom she had hoped would mentor her, seems to take merciless delight in tearing down her best work—and warns her that she’ll lose the merit-based award if she doesn’t improve.

Turns out I’m a natural at magical thinking.

Catherine Linka

Desperate and humiliated, Sabine doesn’t know where to turn. Then she meets Adam, a grad student who understands better than anyone the pressures of art school. He even helps Sabine get insight on Krell by showing her the modern master’s work in progress, a portrait that’s sold for a million dollars sight unseen.

Sabine is enthralled by the portrait; within those swirling, colorful layers of paint is the key to winning her inscrutable teacher’s approval. Krell did advise her to improve her craft by copying a painting she connects with . . . but what would he think of Sabine secretly painting her own version of his masterpiece? And what should she do when she accidentally becomes party to a crime so well -plotted that no one knows about it but her?

People sharing secrets makes you closer, but not mine.

Catherine Linka

Complex and utterly original, What I Want You to See is a gripping tale of deception, attraction, and moral ambiguity.

Review

Here I thought school was tough, but I at least never had to deal with Krell like Sabine did in What I Want You to See! I think everyone has had that one teacher that just immediately seemed to take a disliking to you. Mine was AP US History and it made me avoid anything remotely like history for years it was so bad. On the other hand, I can now say I’m a better writer because of him. But, What I Want You to See shows the lengths we all go to to satisfy those instructors/teachers that push us more than they probably should.

My pencil hovers over my sketch pad, but it refuses to land. I can’t draw myself out of grief.

Catherine Linka

I have to say, YA contemporaries have really been killing it lately! I was in the worst slump come December, and these amazingly powerful contemporaries have made me so excited to read again! What I Want You to See is now added to that list of emotionally thought provoking reads. It deals with really difficult issues, such as homelessness and grief, that nobody should really have to worry about but affects more people than you could imagine. Many people take for granted just how simple life is, and vice versa many people forget that every person has some issue that they are dealing with. And while not all issues are anywhere near the same, those issues connect us and find a way to tie us together.

Everybody has tough times, baby. So it’s important to be kind.

Catherine Linka

I really connected with Sabine. I went to school on financial aid, and if I didn’t keep my grades up I wasn’t going to get a degree. So, I felt (and knew) her struggle when she foresaw her grades and hopes slipping away. In those moments you truly would do pretty much anything to save yourself (or if you’re like me you plan out what hippie commune you can still join).

About the Author

Catherine Linka is the author of the young adult novel WHAT I WANT YOU TO SEE as well as the dystopian series A GIRL CALLED FEARLESS and A GIRL UNDONE. A GIRL CALLED FEARLESS was an ABA Indie Next Pick and won the Young Adult Novel Award 2014 from the Southern California Independent Booksellers Association. A frequent speaker at writing and teen conferences, Catherine received her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and worked as a young adult book buyer for an independent bookstore for seven years. Prior to pursuing a career in publishing, she studied international politics at Georgetown University followed by a master’s degree in business at the University of North Carolina. Catherine is married and lives with her husband in the San Gabriel foothills.

Dream Cast

Sabine

I feel so proud of my pick. I don’t know why, but coming up with a dream cast is harder than it seems? But I really think Joey King could give us that connection to Sabine (if that makes any sense).

Kevin

Ah Kevin, how I struggled with picking who I’d want to portray him. I finally settled on Ansel Elgort because I guess I can kind of see it?

Adam

It took me a wile to think of who I’d cast as Adam, then it hit me: Austin Butler!

Taysha

This one was an easy pick for me. As soon as I was introduced to Taysha I just imagined her as Yara Shahidi.

Krell

I don’t know why, but when I was reading this I IMMEDIATELY saw Krell as Rick Cossnett.

About the Book

The Hand on the Wall (Truly Devious #3)
by Maureen Johnson
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release Date: January 21st 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Mystery, Thriller

My moose,” she said in a low voice. “I finally got it. The universe paid me in moose.”

Maureen Johnson

New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson delivers the witty and pulse-pounding conclusion to the Truly Devious series as Stevie Bell solves the mystery that has haunted Ellingham Academy for over 75 years.

Ellingham Academy must be cursed. Three people are now dead. One, a victim of either a prank gone wrong or a murder. Another, dead by misadventure. And now, an accident in Burlington has claimed another life. All three in the wrong place at the wrong time. All at the exact moment of Stevie’s greatest triumph . . .

She knows who Truly Devious is. She’s solved it. The greatest case of the century.

Perhaps it was always designed as a place that had to be abandoned because of death and danger.

Maureen Johnson

At least, she thinks she has. With this latest tragedy, it’s hard to concentrate on the past. Not only has someone died in town, but David disappeared of his own free will and is up to something. Stevie is sure that somehow—somehow—all these things connect. The three deaths in the present. The deaths in the past. The missing Alice Ellingham and the missing David Eastman. Somewhere in this place of riddles and puzzles there must be answers.

Then another accident occurs as a massive storm heads toward Vermont. This is too much for the parents and administrators. Ellingham Academy is evacuated. Obviously, it’s time for Stevie to do something stupid. It’s time to stay on the mountain and face the storm—and a murderer. In the tantalizing finale to the Truly Devious trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson expertly tangles her dual narrative threads and ignites an explosive end for all who’ve walked through Ellingham Academy

What do you do when the big foam finger of justice points itself at you?

Maureen Johnson

Review

Well, what a series! I have always been a fan of a good old detective/mystery solving story! I could say my love for crime solving began with Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. Or even with Bones. But, if I’m being honest, it really started when I was a kid with Scooby Doo. So, of course the Truly Devious series was right up my alley! Seriously, if you like Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, or any type of mystery novel then you should check this series out!

At least, someone was watching her. She could feel it.

Maureen Johnson

I do have to admit that this series did start out a little slow for me. I don’t know why. I immediately loved the quirky style of writing and felt a sense of kinship with Stevie and her intrigue with murder and crippling anxiety. But, something just made me struggle in the beginning. HOWEVER, I persevered and I am so thankful I did and I encourage anyone who might feel the same way to do the same!

She shook her head and tried to seem alert and together, though she strongly suspected she had been drooling and snoring.

Maureen Johnson

So, one thing I want to say about our main who-done-it of the past: I KNEW IT! I am so proud of myself (and maybe should feel a little disturbed over my ability to sniff out murderers?), because I can honestly say I figured out the big case at the beginning of the first book. But also, I loved the intertwining of the past and present mysteries. The stories wove together so well and I loved all of the snippet chapters from the past.

About the Author

Maureen Johnson is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of several YA novels, including 13 Little Blue Envelopes, Suite Scarlett, The Name of the Star, and Truly Devious. Finding Mr. Better Than You Tour – Review & Giveaway

Click the image to see my booksta post!

About the Book

Finding Mr. Better Than You
by Shani Petroff
Publisher: Swoon Reads
Release Date: January 14, 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Camryn has been dating Marc FOREVER—since freshman year! She dropped out of volleyball to go to all his games, switched her schedule around to be in his favorite class, and has been busting her butt to get into Columbia so they can go to the same college. So when Marc suddenly, and very publically, breaks up with her a week into their senior year so that he can date the new transfer student, she’s absolutely devastated.

But why be sad, when you can get even? Inspired by her favorite movies, Camryn decides that the best revenge is a Senior Year well lived, starring a boy who is ever so much better than her ex. With a little help from her friends, Cam is going to have the Best. Senior. Year. Ever.

Review

This was such a cute story of friendship and finding oneself! The book starts out with basically every Seniors worst nightmare: being dumped and finding out you most likely won’t get accepted into your first (and only) choice of University. Which immediately brought me back to the stress of applying to college and (im)patiently waiting on those acceptance, or rejection, letters!

I love the focus on friendship in this book! It’s so wholesome to see healthy friendships in ya stories, as well as pointing out that friends are just as (if not more) important as having a boyfriend/girlfriend is! I also think Cam’s love of all things romance was such a cute touch! As you often see in a fun montage in rom coms, Cam went through a lot of changes and self-discovery to become comfortable with who she is now throughout the story.

Now, I want to say that this story is written very much from a high school perspective. So, don’t come into this story expecting mature and “settled” characters. They are young and may act juvenile, but they are finding out who they are along the way. If you are expecting something a bit more “adult,” then this may not be the read for you, but if you want something cheesy and lighthearted then I definitely recommend this story! I also think a lot of teenagers will relate to this book and find a bit of their struggles reflected in the book. The characters felt so realistic and I wish I would have had a book like this while I was in high school!

The Piper’s Pursuit Tour – Review, Favorite Quotes, & Giveaway

About the Book

The Piper’s Pursuit

by Melanie Dickerson

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Release date: December 3, 2019

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Retelling

A plague of rats. A giant beast outside the village walls. A host of missing children. And one young woman determined to save her people.

But how would it feel to look into her eyes and know that she wished to marry him?

Melanie Dickerson

In 1424 Hamlin, Katerina faces threats from all sides. An outbreak of rats has overtaken the village, a mysterious beast is on a killing rampage of the village’s children, and her evil stepfather is a dark presence inside the walls of her own home. Katerina is determined to hunt and kill the Beast of Hamlin herself before more lives are lost.

I am a free woman in the eyes of the Church, and I will not marry against my will. And it most certainly is not my will to marry.

Melanie Dickerson

When Steffan, the handsome but brash duke’s son, comes to town seeking glory and reward, Katerina decides he might be the ally she’s been looking for—even though the sweet music he plays on his pipe seems the only gentle thing about him. But there’s more to Steffan than she suspects, and she finds drawn to him despite her misgivings.

She would have sworn he was thinking, You find me handsome, don’t you?

Melanie Dickerson

Can Katerina and Steffan stop the enemy from stealing every child of Hamlin? Or will their interference create a worse fate for them all? Melanie Dickerson delivers another exciting fairy tale journey of intrigue and romance in this reimagining of the classic Pied Piper story.

Review

Ok, I’ve said it time and time again: I don’t want another retelling unless it’s done right or is unique. Sorry, but I just can’t fathom yet ANOTHER Beauty and the Beast retelling (I get why people love it, but I never really even loved the original). Well, boy oh boy did Melanie Dickerson give me just what I asked for! First of all, The Piper’s Pursuit is a retelling of the Pied Piper, so unique DOUBLE CHECK. Secondly, her writing, ugh, I love it!

Hadn’t he always said he didn’t like children? Now he had fifty-two of them looking to him to save them.

Melanie Dickerson

So, The Piper’s Pursuit has that dark aura that comes with real fairy tales. You know right away this isn’t going to be a happy go lucky story and there are going to be some dark elements. Like a swarm of rats, we’re introduced to that horror REAL quick. And can I just say: ew. Next up we have a little problem with a beastie stealing children and eating villagers. Like I said, dark and also gruesome since we get some pretty vivid imagery of what the remains of the villagers look like after being nommed on.

People sang and danced and ate bread rolls made in the shape of rats.

Melanie Dickerson

Now, for the characters. Katerina is fiesty and independent. She wants the world to know she don’t need no man to protect herself or her people, and I am LIVING for that! And then we have Steffan, the cocky pretty boy. Now, I’ve seen some reviews where people weren’t sure of how much they liked his character at first, but hey, I’m a sucker for a “bad boy” who has made the wrong decisions and is trying to make boost his image. I know, they’re the worst… Which probably says a lot about myself.

But something had shifted, something deep inside her was leaning, leaning toward Steffan. And she wasn’t sure if it felt good or . . . terrifying.

Melanie Dickerson

BUT ANYWAYS, this books was so great! It always feels like such a success when I’ve found a fairy tale retelling that I actually like! It’s just, to me, a really oversaturated genre so I’m often extra picky.

About the Book

by Naomi Hughes
Publisher: Page Street Kids
Release Date: November 5th 2019

Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction

After an attack on earth, all reflective surfaces become weapons to release monsters, causing a planet-wide ban on mirrors. Despite the danger, the demand rises, and 17-year-old Marty Callahan becomes a distributor in an illegal mirror trade―until he’s caught by the mayor’s son, whose slate is far from clean. Both of them are exiled for their crimes to one of the many abandoned cities overrun by fog. But they soon realize their thoughts influence their surroundings and their deepest fears begin to manifest.

With fast pacing and riveting characters, this is a book that you’ll finish in one sitting.

Review

So, I don’t typically read sci-fi books but this book was an exception, which I think can tell you how good it was? I mean, if my opinion is even worth anything. The plot was amazing and, while I typically like my Aliens Luxen style, I was thoroughly intrigued by everything in this story! There was some anxiety and OCD representation from the squishable (this is a term of endearment for me) Marty and I felt that. I particularly loved the peek into his mind (because, dude, can he see into my mind? It looked too familiar) and how he actually applied some coping strategies from when he was able to get therapy… You know, before everything went cuckoo banana pants.

I have to say though, even with aliens invading earth, the most unrealistic part of this story was that a small island in Florida would be saved. When the scenery was being described I was thinking, “huh, this seems like it’s in Florida… But that can’t be right!” And lo and behold, IT WAS. I was shook. I couldn’t believe that the state I am currently settled in would survive. Maybe that makes me a pessimist? Maybe I just keep thinking that Florida is just going to wash away in a massive flood? I don’t know, but I giggled thinking that an island in Florida would survive an alien invasion… But then again, it makes sense?

But aside from my well intentioned snarkiness (welcome to my mind, this is what it’s like inside), this book was amazing! It has made me realize that I really need to expand what I read (which I have been really focused on doing lately) and open myself up to reading books that have *gasp* mc who are males or *double gasp* get over my random aversion to sci-fi. I don’t know why I am like this, but thank you to Refraction for opening my eyes to new wonders!

About the Author

Hey! I’m Naomi Hughes, writer of quirky young adult fiction (usually involving physics and/or unicorns). I live in the Midwest US, a region I love even though it tries to murder me with tornadoes every spring. When not writing, my hobbies include reading (of course), traveling, and geeking out over Marvel superheroes and certain time-traveling Doctors. My debut YA sci-fi standalone novel, Afterimage, is available now from Page Street Publishing. My next novel, Refraction (also a standalone YA sci-fi), comes out in Nov 2019. I also offer freelance critique services at naomiedits.com.

Release date: November 5, 2019

Genre: Young Adult, Mystery, Thriller

Kimberly Gabriel

Synopsis:

The Swarm is unrecognizable, untraceable, and unpredictable—random attacks on the streets of Chicago by a mob of crazed teens that leaves death in its wake. It’s been two years since the last attack, but Lia Finch has found clues that reveal the Swarm is ready to claim a new victim.

Lia is the only one still pursuing her father’s killers, two years after attorney Steven Finch’s murder by the Swarm. Devastated and desperate for answers, Lia will do anything to uncover the reasons behind his death and to stop someone else from being struck down. But due to debilitating asthma and PTSD that leaves her with a tenuous hold on reality, Lia is the last person to mount a crusade on her own.

After a close encounter with the Swarm puts Lia on their radar, she teams up with a teen hacker, a reporter, and a mysterious stranger who knows firsthand how the mob works. Together, they work to uncover the master puppeteer behind the group. Though if Lia and her network don’t stop the person pulling the strings—and fast—Lia may end up the next target.

Review

Air in. Air out. Slow. Methodic. My lame attempt at convincing my body that breathing isn’t so hard.

Ok you guys, this book was a ride! I started off at the edge of my seat and it only continued to build! I’ve been wanting to read an edge of your seat thriller lately, and this book delivered! What makes this books so successful is the realness of it. You could imagine these events happening, especially in today’s society, and the sense of foreboding really heightens the reading experience. This is truly a mind blowing whirlwind of a read! Now, you’re probably wondering: what is the Swarm? Well, think the purge and add in some gang violence and you get the Swarm, a group of teenagers wanted for several murders who gang up on their victims in a public space and beat them to death. Gruesome, I know.

I had inner strength, that in a defining moment my subconscious chose to fight rather than sleep.

Now, I want to just say that this book is everything I never knew I needed for one reason: asthma representation. I know this sounds silly, but I think this is the first time in my entire life that I’ve read a book with the mc having asthma. While many probably think that asthma isn’t a big deal, and for me it’s not that big of a deal anymore, but growing up my entire life pretty much revolved around asthma. People don’t understand just how terrifying it is to have your lungs suddenly close up and thinking you’re never going to breathe again. So, reading about a character itching for her inhaler was something I never would have thought I needed in my life, but it was. And I hope that teens and young adults reading this with asthma find a sense of kin in the simplistic moments of the story where asthma takes over.

Most people never got the chance to see that side of him.

It’s rare for me to make a connection like this in a book, so for that I am beyond happy. But, for everyone, this story is one heck of a story. If you like solving puzzles and crime, desperately wondering what is going to happen next, nail biting realistic horror, then this book is for you!
