This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang, but a whatever.

The whateverpocalypse. That’s what Touré, a twenty-something Cambridge coder, calls it after waking up one morning to find himself seemingly the only person left in the city. Once he finds Robbie and Carol, two equally disoriented Harvard freshmen, he realizes he isn’t alone, but the name sticks: Whateverpocalypse. But it doesn’t explain where everyone went. It doesn’t explain how the city became overgrown with vegetation in the space of a night. Or how wild animals with no fear of humans came to roam the streets.

Add freakish weather to the mix, swings of temperature that spawn tornadoes one minute and snowstorms the next, and it seems things can’t get much weirder. Yet even as a handful of new survivors appear—Paul, a preacher as quick with a gun as a Bible verse; Win, a young professional with a horse; Bethany, a thirteen-year-old juvenile delinquent; and Ananda, an MIT astrophysics adjunct—life in Cambridge, Massachusetts gets stranger and stranger.

The self-styled Apocalypse Seven are tired of questions with no answers. Tired of being hunted by things seen and unseen. Now, armed with curiosity, desperation, a shotgun, and a bow, they become the hunters. And that’s when things truly get weird.

Praise for The Apocalypse Seven

“Doucette’s ’seven’ aren’t just ‘magnificent’—they’re also entertaining as hell.” —Scott Sigler, New York Times bestselling author of the Infected Trilogy

“The adventure I’ve been looking for! Never once did I know what to expect, and I loved being proved wrong at every turn. Far more mind-bending than a book this fun has any right to be.” —Zack Jordan, author of The Last Human

“[A] riveting postapocalyptic outing… Doucette’s vibrant prose and unique premise make for an enticing adventure.” —Publishers Weekly

“A cinematic, speculative exercise in which a ragtag band saves the world, kind of.” —Kirkus Reviews

Review

You know, I’ve been *complaining* about a lack of post apocalyptic/dystopian works lately and lo and behold this book fell right into my lap. And boy oh boy was it a mind twisting amazing ride for my parched from this genre brain. I mean there was just so much this book delivered and it also had something unique and different from all of the stories that fall into this category out there.

Usually I’m…. selective… with what characters I like. And with a book that features seven main characters I would expect myself to have a few that made me roll my eyes or want to skip over their parts (I know, I know, I’m picky). But with this book I didn’t feel that way and looked forward to what each character would unfold in the story. And I think it was in part because of how complex the story way. But it really worked and I fell into needing to find out what is going to happen and what the heck already happened.

This book was honestly just what I needed. It filled a gap in genres that I’ve been desperately needing filled and at the same time provided me with something new. And it was definitely one that I didn’t want to put down!

Unchosen Tour – Review, Favorite Quotes, & Giveaway

About the Book

Book Title: Unchosen
Author: Katharyn Blair
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Release Date: January 26, 2021
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic

Leave her alone. You’ve already destroyed this world. Leave this girl alone.

— Katharyn Blair

Katharyn Blair crafts a fiercely feminist fantasy with a horrifying curse, swoon-worthy sea captains, and the power of one girl to choose her own fate in this contemporary standalone adventure that’s perfect for fans of The Fifth Wave and Seafire, and for anyone who has ever felt unchosen.

“Such heart. Bravery. Guts.”

— Katharyn Blair

For Charlotte Holloway, the world ended twice.

The first was when her childhood crush, Dean, fell in love—with her older sister.

The second was when the Crimson, a curse spread through eye contact, turned the majority of humanity into flesh-eating monsters.

Neither end of the world changed Charlotte. She’s still in the shadows of her siblings. Her popular older sister, Harlow, now commands forces of survivors. And her talented younger sister, Vanessa, is the Chosen One—who, legend has it, can end the curse.

When their settlement is raided by those seeking the Chosen One, Charlotte makes a reckless decision to save Vanessa: she takes her place as prisoner.

The word spreads across the seven seas—the Chosen One has been found.

But when Dean’s life is threatened and a resistance looms on the horizon, the lie keeping Charlotte alive begins to unravel. She’ll have to break free, forge new bonds, and choose her own destiny if she has any hope of saving her sisters, her love, and maybe even the world.

Because sometimes the end is just a new beginning.

“He cursed the world. He wanted the world to suffer for my rejection of him.”

— Katharyn Blair

Review

Angst. Angst. Angst. Angst. Angst. Remember when YA books used to be pure angst? Yeah, I do. And if you can’t tell I kind of miss it. But this book took that angst and all of those old YA tropes I still love oh so much and made them fresh and new and revitalized the genre in a way I haven’t seen yet. So yeah, I kind of enjoyed this one. OH! And there are (kind of) ZOMBIES!

“Did she figure out I’ve been lying? Or is it finally time?”

— Katharyn Blair

Where do I even start with this review though? The characters? Yeah, I really liked them. The plot? Well, like I already said, I really liked that. The fantasy/sci-fi/dystopian elements? Yeah, those were perfect. So, basically, this was probably my favorite read of the year so far. There were just so many things that screamed “me” in this one and it just kept delivering throughout the entire book.

“And it’s easier to be mad at him than to be anythign else, so.”

— Katharyn Blair

Everything in this book just works so well together and fit so perfectly into this absolutely amazing plot. And it has those classic/older YA elements that I truly do miss (don’t get me wrong, I’m obviously still a fan of the genre) and made them fresh and modern. So there’s just so much to love about this book that you’re going to just need to read it and find out all of the amazing stuff throughout it.

No touching today for a healthy tomorrow.

For fifty years, the Key Corporation has defended humanity against a deadly virus that spreads through touch. Lovers don’t kiss, or even hold hands. Personal boundaries are valued above all. Break the laws, and you’ll face execution.

Elodie, a talented young nurse, believes in the mission of the Key and has never questioned the laws that control her life. But Elodie is forced to break the rules when she sets out in search of a terminal patient who goes missing while under her care.

From the outside, it seems like Aiden was given everything he could want from the Key—a purpose, an education, and a future. But Aiden knows more than he’s letting on, and the dark secrets he’s keeping could tear the Key’s strict society apart.

When Elodie and Aiden’s lives collide, the fallout will be devastating. What do you do when the brutal system that once kept you safe hunts you down? Run.
