The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly
by Jamie Pacton

And I suddenly know exactly what I need to do.
Jamie Pacton
Kit Sweetly slays sexism, bad bosses, and bad luck to become a knight at a medieval-themed restaurant.
Working as a wench―i.e. waitress―at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college.
Is the Girl Knight going to end up dead in a laundromat?
Jamie Pacton
Company policy allows only guys to be knights. So when Kit takes her brother’s place and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But the Girl Knight won’t go down without a fight. As other wenches join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they’ll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval―if they don’t get fired first.
This. Is. My. Life.
How. Very. Not. According. To. Plan.

Review
I have to admit that as soon as I saw this book I fell in love with it. It was just one of those books that I immediately knew I’d love and adore. It’s just one of those books that will fully entertain you while also portraying a fierce feminist story. Plus this book kept making me laugh, and while I always love books that make me laugh I needed that especially right now.
With a deep breath and a prayer to the badass ladies of the Middle Ages, I hit Send.
Jamie Pacton
So, as a woman I can completely feel for Kit with dealing with sexism in the workplace. So I really appreciated that aspect of the story. It’s always exciting to see the underdog succeed in the workplace and put others in their place. But what I think this book did the best in was making Kit seem like the actual teenager she really is. I always like when I read a book and the character shockingly acts their age instead of some extremely well versed philosopher. But, while this book claims to be a romantic contemporary, I feel like the romance wasn’t really the forefront of this book. Which I really didn’t mind, I mean there was already so many other aspects in this book that it didn’t really feel necessary.
Have you ever thought about jousting?
Jamie Pacton
I’m always a little wary of books that boldly declare themselves to be feminist. I know that sound backwards, but I just don’t like when they get too preachy and the story gets set aside. I much prefer when books infuse the feminism around the story. I was glad that this story did just that and effortlessly juggled the kitschy story, the feministic undertones, while also supporting a diverse cast of characters. I think the mix of contemporary and historical really helped make this story and sets it apart from other current contemporary books.
