Packed with high-stakes action, humor, and hijinks, this genre-bending YA fantasy from the author of The Disasters is perfect for fans of Marie Lu and Amie Kaufman.
In Kyrkarta, magic—better known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.
Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever. But when their plan (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world. No pressure.
With a diverse cast, infinite wit, and a fresh take on magic, Spellhacker will keep readers on the edge of their seats from start to explosive finish.
Review
Wow, what an amazingly fun and fast paced read! Spellhacker is such a unique and interesting read. This was one of those books where as soon as I started it I knew it would be an “easy” read. Now, I say easy in that it is one of those reads where it’s purely just an enjoyment to read. The writing is quirky, the characters are diverse and unique, and the premise is amazing.
So, for starters the magic in this books is really interesting. It is known as maz and can be wielded by some on their own and others through the use of technology. It was once basically a natural resource, but a plague from the maz following an earthquake allowed for a company to take it over and sell it for exorbitant amounts of money.
As you can probably tell by now, this book is a dystopian read. But it is a combo dystopian, sci-fi, and fantasy read. I don’t know, it’s hard to describe because the book feels like it is something new.
I’ve also got to point out that the representation in this book is amazing! The characters have flaws that make them into who they are. It has a queer non-binary romance. Plus it involves heists, which are always an amazing plot choice! So, I definitely recommend you check it out if you are looking for something utterly unique with primarily sapphic representation!

About the Author

M.K. England is an author and YA librarian who grew up on the Space Coast of Florida and now calls small town rural Virginia home. When she’s not writing or librarianing, MK can be found drowning in fandom, rolling dice at the Dungeons & Dragons table, digging in the garden, or feeding her video game addiction. She loves Star Wars with a desperate, heedless passion. It’s best if you never speak of Sherlock Holmes in her presence. You’ll regret it. She is also the author of THE DISASTERS.
