Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

I belong to no one.

Isabel Ibañez

A lush tapestry of magic, romance, and revolución, drawing inspiration from Bolivian politics and history.

Ximena is the decoy Condesa, a stand-in for the last remaining Illustrian royal. Her people lost everything when the usurper, Atoc, used an ancient relic to summon ghosts and drive the Illustrians from La Ciudad. Now Ximena’s motivated by her insatiable thirst for revenge, and her rare ability to spin thread from moonlight.

She can read the stars, whereas I merely copy them.

Isabel Ibañez

When Atoc demands the real Condesa’s hand in marriage, it’s Ximena’s duty to go in her stead. She relishes the chance, as Illustrian spies have reported that Atoc’s no longer carrying his deadly relic. If Ximena can find it, she can return the true aristócrata to their rightful place.

She hunts for the relic, using her weaving ability to hide messages in tapestries for the resistance. But when a masked vigilante, a warm-hearted princess, and a thoughtful healer challenge Ximena, her mission becomes more complicated. There could be a way to overthrow the usurper without starting another war, but only if Ximena turns her back on revenge—and her Condesa.

Anger and fear both war within me. I pray to Luna that my anger will win.

Review

The words rip out of me. “Kill them all.” . . . I wish I could have given the order twice.

Isabel Ibañez

Ok, so as soon as I started Woven in Moonlight I was hooked. Like, immediately messaged my friend and told her to read it hooked. Lately I’ve been seeking out books that are unique and new, and this one just blew any expectations I had for finding something like that out of the water! The magic system was so cool, and never have I wanted the magic of a character as much as I want Ximena’s Luna magic!

We stay like that, looking at each other as if we’ve discovered a new species of alpaca.

Isabel Ibañez

Now, while I’m on the topic of Ximena let me discuss some of my inner thoughts. The first thing that made me love her was after a certain moment in the beginning made me go, “dannggggg, this girl is tough!” Which, in my language, is basically the highest honor. I found myself rooting for her, being sad for her, and ready for her to kick some a**! I also want to take some time to discuss my other favorite: Rumi. I know he wasn’t supposed to be likable when he was introduced, but I couldn’t help it and he made me smirk. And he continued to make me smirk. And giggle. And basically just fawn over him. I love his and Ximena’s banter back and forth, and I practically died in a fit of giggles every time she told him to wash his clothes.

The moonlight slants, turning supple and smooth, bending and twisting as it lengthens.

Isabel Ibañez

I want to say so much more, but I don’t want to give any major plot points away! Which is probably why this review just sounds like I’m fangirling instead of talking about specifics. I want you to just go into this book with the vague plot and find yourself immersed in all of the twists and turns and intrigue. Go on this adventure with Ximena and feel as she does.

I want to be heard too. Sometimes, when my temper gets the best of me, I’m secretly pleased. That’s the real me breaking through the mask.

Isabel Ibañez

Finally, I pray to Luna that this world is expanded on! Woven in Moonlight was written as a standalone, but by golly do I need more! I have questions! I need answers! I need to learn more! I want the magic expanded! I want the history! I want to see more of a certain relationship! AAAAACCCCKKKK!!!!

To give up my life for her should it come to that. And despite my duty, despite the long years of living as somebody else, I love her. As a sister, as my future queen.
