A spellbinding story of truce and trickery from the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Paper Magician series.
Enna knows to fear the mystings that roam the wildwood near her home. When one tries to kill her to obtain an enchanted stone, Enna takes a huge risk: fighting back with a mysting of her own.
Maekallus’s help isn’t free. His price? A kiss. One with the power to steal her soul. But their deal leaves Maekallus bound to the mortal realm, which begins eating him alive. Only Enna’s kiss, given willingly, can save him from immediate destruction. It’s a temporary salvation for Maekallus and a lingering doom for Enna. Part of her soul now burns bright inside Maekallus, making him feel for the first time.
Enna shares Maekallus’s suffering, but her small sacrifice won’t last long. If she and Maekallus can’t break the spell binding him to the mortal realm, Maekallus will be consumed completely—and Enna’s soul with him.

Review
Beauty and the Beast meets The Princess and the Frog, The Will and the Wilds is a magical tale of faeries, adventure, and trust. Ok, so they’re called mystings but you get the point! For anyone who loves fairytale retellings, this is a must read! As a self proclaimed retelling critic, I can say that I found this story refreshing and fun!
The writing in this story is very “sharp.” It zings through the story and drops you off into the middle of Enna’s beloved wildwood. The reader is only given as much detail on the different types of mystings as Enna knowns. And even then her knowledge is not always reliable, as she is relying on bits and pieces of information that has been passed on to her from her grandmother.
Enna is consistent to describe herself as just plain, but she has nettle and strength that has come from years of watching over her father. She has always been intrigued by the mystings and documents everything in her big book, something that she spends her time dreaming about publishing. Then we have the beastly Maekallus, mysting extraordinaire. He’s got smirks, sass, and becomes a bit more human-like throughout the story.
This is a fast paced read and it’s a really fun take on a classic tale! It takes a simple concept of a kiss, and makes it into a magical story!
