Echoes Between Us is bestselling author Katie McGarry’s breakout teen contemporary novel about a girl with everything to lose and the boy who will do anything to save her.

Veronica sees ghosts. More specifically, her mother’s ghost. The afterimages of blinding migraines caused by the brain tumor that keeps her on the fringes and consumes her whole life haunt her, even as she wonders if it’s something more…

Golden boy Sawyer is handsome and popular, a state champion swimmer, but his adrenaline addiction draws him to Veronica.

A girl with nothing to live for and a boy with everything to lose–can they conquer their demons together?

Review

GHOSTS! Gah, I love a good ghost story! Also, my mind was blown around 50 pages in an it’s one of those instances where I NEED to talk about it, but I also can’t because I want your mind to be blown when you read it. But, let’s just say my jaw dropped, I couldn’t believe that I was blind enough to not figure it out, and then I went back and started rereading with fresh eyes. So, in case you can’t tell already, I really enjoyed this book! I mean, it was like a match made in heaven for me since I immediately shelve all ghost stories as favorite stories.

Ok you guys, this book kept me up WAY past my bed time. It was just that good and amazing! I really appreciated the authenticity of the ghosts and medium in this story. As a fellow ghost magnet, much like Veronica, I completely understand the desire to keep happy ghosts around and ignore the negative ones. But, I have learned my lesson and now do weekly smudgings of my house. This story also included some dyslexia representation, and again I was so happy to see the authenticity of it! The author clearly, and accurately, pointed out that dyslexia doesn’t affect every person the same way and I really appreciated the time spent going over what it is and how it impact’s a person’s life, but doesn’t change who that person is. Finally, I have to again point out the accuracy in the addiction representation in this story! As you can see, I’m a bit excited over not only the representation, but also the accuracy and tidbits of facts shared about everything!

I also just want to forewarn everyone: don’t be like me and get confused, this book alternates perspectives. I don’t know why I am like this, but every time I read a book that’s told from multiple perspectives I immediately get confused the first switch. It happens even when I pay attention (like with this book) and expect it. I guess I am just meant to have to take a step back and think about what exactly I just read.

This story really pulls on what I am coining “classic” ya tropes, but it adds in this modern take on representation that I love so much! Overall it is an amazing story that I couldn’t look away from! I really connected with Veronica, and even though I do not have a brain tumor I do get terrible headaches and migraines. Then Sawyer is just a cutie patootie and deserves everything he wants!
